Vitali is so often reduced to height, reahc and being tough. What people overlook is the fact that in his prime he had incredible reflexes, he made opponents miss more than anyone in his era. Of course it still looked awkward how he did it, but it was very effective. Ike is smaller and certainly was no speed demon. Hide, Donald and others believed Vitali was slow and then found how easily Vitali neutralized their assumed speed advantage with his reflexes and punches from weird angles.

I don't see Ike outlanding Vitali, since nobody ever landed more punches than taking punches from Vitali. Young Vitali had great one punch power before his surgery and his chin is as good as Ike's. Ike is somewhat an example of how the myth of a fighter is created. If Tyson had retired in 1988, lots of people would probably have believed he was really invincible and would have beaten any ATG in history. Ike proved his ability against two elite fighters, but both were very short for HW's. Byrd and Tua are not opponents who are a measuring stick for fighting Vitali successfully.

Vitali was green in 99 (or at the very least nowhere near the fighter he'd become in 03) whilst ike had blasted his way to victories over an unbeaten byrd and tua.

In 99 you'd have to favour ike to pound out a victory.

Prime for prime, we'll never know how good either could have been but vitali gets the hypothetical nod.

Well in fairness all of the great black hopes have been put to the sword. It makes sense that those who have championed those hopes have now turned to mythical match ups not surprisingly involving fighters in prison.

Jesus the attitude of some of these posters is ridiculous.

This is a boxing forum, we discuss fights past, present and fantasy. It isn't some cheerleading club.

If I do a joe louis v jack johnson thread it would just be debated sensibly, whenever vitali is matched up people get a sense he's being picked on.

For the record, someone thinking in 99 a prime ike beats a green vitali has absolutely zero relevance on the big mans legacy.

Ibeabuchi was just on another level to Vitali at that time. He brushed Byrd to the side like he was nothing, same thing would happen with Vitali.....

yes because a 6 foot 2 inch guy with a stocky build who pretty much drew with Tua would beat a 6 foot 7" inch guy with better stamina, more power, better footwork, ring intelligence, better fighting pedigree and greater reach.

In other news most American's believe their economy is 'on the mend!'

Vitali wasn't prime in '99 so i guess that Ike gets the nod.

I think Ike had far more power than Vitali. But this is a nightmare matchup for him also, vitali is all but impossible to knockout in the first five/six rounds, and Ike's stamina was poor. It would be a great style matchup even for a green Vitali...........

That because, that's really all he is, tall, heavy, big, and slow.

If you see what Stewart has done is to make him take advantage of these primary advantages, to stand upright, stay at distance, and use the jab to keep his shorter opponents at bay.

All the Klits are are tall, heavy, super steroided Super heavyweights horned into a smaller heavyweight division which is presently filled with mediocre opposition.

These physical advantages would be offset by someone at Ike's nature skill level. :yep
In fact, I believe even a prime David Tua would have accomplished chomping down these big oak trees. Neither Klit could withstand or match that kind of offensive output that both Ike and David possessed.

Vitali throws 80 punches a round, Ike and Tua woiuld have a hard time keeping up with that. Besides, Vitali was a master of making opponents miss, even Lennox landed 58 fewer punches in 6 rounds against Vitali. watch his fights and look at his use of reflexes, a 6'2 guy like Ike would absolutely awesome footwork and speed, which he clearly didn't have. he was a very good fighter against smaller opponents like Tua or Byrd.
