I love Quartey and followed his entire career but he is a little bit overrated here.
He was outboxed by Vargas and was still in his prime.I agree that the draw with Lopez was a robbery and the fight with Oscar was a close one.
He was a very good fighter but not a great one, which he has to blame for himself because he was lazy.

What you have to consider is when Quartey fought Oscar he had not fought in 17 months and had already considered retiring from the ring. Oscar was in his prime. Quartey was not! When Oscars camp talked to Quarteys people and offered Ike to fight him Quartey at first said no but of course money talks, especially Oscars money. They agreed to the fight but due to Quarteys inactivity for so long asked for at least 3 months to get ready. Of course he was refused and had to take the fight on 6 weeks notice. Ike refused knowing it was not long enough. Typical Oscar move here. He threw more money at Quartey and Ike couldn't resist. He signed. So when Quartey fought that night he was not as shrp as he could have been. 17 months is an eternity in boxing as most of you know. Yet Quartey fought a prime Oscar to the max that night with most sportswriters and boxing gurus saying it could have gone either way and actually most had Quartey winning the fight.
A prime Quartey in great shape would have taken a prime Oscar that night.
That's the reason for no rematch. Oscars camp knew.
How good was Quartey? Good enough to beat a prime Oscar. And that's pretty good!

If Clottey had power he'd be Ike Quartey.

That should give you an idea of how good Quartey was at 147lbs.

So you're saying Quartey was a B level fighter with good power?

    I agree.
DLH clearly won rounds 1,3,10 and 12(plus the KD)
Quartey clearly won rounds 2,5,6,7,8 and 9
Rounds 4 and 11 were close and could have gone either way. So, IMO, the fight could have been between 115-112 for Quartey and 114-113 for DLH.

Quartey suffered two robberies IMO. De La Hoya and Forrest, especially Forrest.

How much greater would his legacy have been had he gotten the nod in both fights?

Right now, Quartey is remembered as a fighter with tremendous ability and one of the great left jabs. However, his resume doesn't match up with his talent and I think most people see this. Had he gotten the nod in both of those fights, he'd be remembered as a truly great fighter, probably along the lines of Winky Wright.

It's a shame he didn't get the nod. That not only cost him status but millions i'm sure. It's too bad.

    Good point.

I wonder if he's called it a career. He hasn't fought since losing to Wright.

well i see this is still around the front page. I still stand behind my opinion of clottey being a better fighter than ike. I know Ike has a great resume he had competetive fights with all he fought. I just truly believe that people here will change their minds on joshua once he starts to beat the better competition that is out now. Than maybe people will see the light, and the beauty of it is that it will happen this year and the next.

I'm a frequent defender of Clottey on here - not a hyper by any means, I recognize his limits and think he caps out at B+, but do think there is a great deal of unfair backlash against Margaritards' overhyping of him and feel he gets caught in the crossfire and underrated as a result - but I would never, ever go so far as to say he was a better fighter than, really, any version of Ike (including the one that recently beat but didn't "beat" Forrest). In a head to head matchup I think it's not even competitive.
