Close fight that could've gone either way. I watched it a few days ago and thought Ike won but didn't score it so I don't have a strong case. Thanks for the vid can u get one on Ike-Vargas? Thanks.
close fight that i had quartey winning.. though i think both fighters weren't at their best for this. oscar underperforming like usual and quartey physically weary from a long layoff
Great fight that opened up the division. At the time there was deadlock and once the moneymaker Oscar took a tough fight and fought Ike, it all started opening up. I had Quartey winning this by a couple of rounds. He "dawg'd" Oscar with that jab. DLH closed it out like a champ in the last round, but it wasn't enough IMO. Quartey certainly had more of a shout at getting robbed here then Pernell did in his fight with Oscar, which is often said to be a "robbery" and clearly wasn't. Ike vs. Oscar was a close fight though, so there's really not much argument had it gone either way. People can say what they want about De La Hoya but he fought everybody. His record in terms of people he fought, is one of the best of recent times. Apart from not fighting Vernon and Winky, which you could understand to a degree and he really shouldn't get much flak for.
Great little fight. Oscar won this with his jab and the knockdown and flurry in the final round. Ike tried to coast to a victory and it cost him.
1. Quartey's jab was the more consistent, authoritative and all round better of the two. 2. Quartey also scored a KD. 3. Quartey won his rounds more clearly and a shoe-shining effort in the last is not enough IMO. It was a great effort though admittedly.
I had it 114-113 for Quartey. Good fight but I thought Ike's jab put enough rounds in the bank that Oscars big last round shouldn't have cost him the fight. From memory though, the judges had Oscar winning even without the knockdown.
It really surprises me to watch how fast Hoya was in his younger days. I haven't seen much footage of him from that time period, as I wasn't following the sport at the time, but he really does have wonderfully fast hands. Ike has one of the best jabs I've ever seen, and Hoya was able to actually come over the top of it with right hands once or twice, which showed some good appreciation for timing, too. Crazy last round -- I rarely see such exhausted fighters. They were literally just standing there and circling at the end, and Hoya was particularly gone -- he could barely even hold up a guard. I wonder how Floyd would have done against that version of Hoya, or Ike. Would have been interesting to watch.
Awesome fight and video. Oscar fought everyone and always came to fight. Its sad to see all the hate he gets. Imagine boxing without Oscar. Boxing definately would not have been as popular as it was. Specially since Oscar followed up Tyson.
Quartey's jab was good, but Oscar's jab kept Quartey humble. Oscar scored TWO KD's. And the alst KD nearly has Quartey out! While I agree that Ike 's round seemed more clear, the last round was not no shoe shining effort, Quartey was alive on pure instinct. Any other ref would have stopped the fight. After the 12th round beating, Quartey was never the same.
