I've always liked Ike mainly because of that incredible jab which I rate second to Holmes all time. There's a YouTube video of him training for Forest doing MIT work that's well worth watching. Anyway his career seemed pretty hot and cold. I always felt there was more he could show if he was more consistent. Any thoughts or comments??
The Bazooka!!! Ike wanted big fights only. Plus he was fed up with the judges. Felt he got shafted against Jose Luis Lopez, then DeLaHoya and then Vargas. Undefeated in his career and then 3 fights in a row where he drew and lost on the scorecards. He had so much left though. I think he rips through Trinidad and most likely walks down Mosley at 147. Edit: He did take too much time off between Lopez and Oscar, and then of course Oscar and Vargas.
Him brutalising the top notch Crisanto Espana is worth a watch. Around '96 he really looked the business. Legitimate piston of a jab that was more like a straight right. No doubt he'd have cleaned up today against the likes of Thurman, Garcia and Khan.
Ike was good. He had solid wins over Lonnie Smith W10, Crisanto Espana KO11, and Vince Phillips KO3... but he struggled in his win over Oba Carr WMD12 and his draw vs. Jose Lopez (Lopez dropped him twice). A 14 month layoff followed the Lopez fight (they should have fought again) but I think it helped him. He looked very good vs. Oscar DeLaHoya but came up a little short and lost, LSD12 (both men were dropped). He had another 14 month layoff before taking on Fernando Vargas, L12. It was a good fight but a clear win for Vargas. A nearly 5 year layoff followed. He came back with 3 wins at MW, 2 by KO before losing a close decision to Vernon Forrest and a clear decision to Winky Wright.
His "Jab" is phenomenal. The sheer speed of it... Whoa! At the poster that mentioned the video of his pad-work; I watch it regularly. So damn fast and powerful!
one of my favorite fighters, he had one of the all time power jabs :good why more fighters don't commit to the jab more still puzzles me :think
I liked Ike, and I'm Ghanaian , but he doesn't beat Trinidad or a prime Moseley. Ike had no defense and one hand, his right looked like a swinging rusty gate.
I think he would have given mosley a lot of problems. Not sure about tito, would have been interesting.
And Phillips came to fight! THat win basically put Quartey in the upper echelon and gave notice to fight fans. Read about it in Ring magazine and finally had the pleasure of watching it on youtube a few months back. D E S T R U C T I O N .
