Yes it was. Other than rounds 6 and 12, the fight lacked action. And it wasn't one of those great chess-matches where despite the lack of action, there's guys setting traps, one guy making a mistake, the other paying. It was just a whole lot of posing. Ike's jab was great.
:good Any versions of them @ 147 or 154 (barring 2006 for Quartey, by which point he was both slowing down physically and too badly disillusioned with the sport to get up for it...), definitely. The green early 90's Ike at light welter vs. the 140lb PBF of '04/'05, probably not. :yep
Quartey = 6exiest Jab of all time, so hard, so straight, always hitting the sweet spot...non stop He can bang my wife or daughters anytime he wants
Quartey or even prime SRR can never beat Mayweather Mayweather is unbeatable, he is a master at ducking risky fights.
This welter generation leaves a bad taste in my mouth. They fought each other, but it could have been so much better. Oscar vs Trinidad was the only fight when 2 welter champs were peaking and the fight was a real stinker. Oscar vs Quartey:Great fight but Ike wasn't in his prime anymore,he had an 18 month lay off before he fought Oscar and in his last fight he drew with Jose Luis Lopez,he dominated the early and mid rounds but faded badly in the end and was dropped twice in the later rounds. His fight with Pernell was cancelled when Pee tested positive after a fight against a russian guy and Oscar postponed their fight for several months because of a cut under his eye. Ike had a lot of ring rust when he finally fought Oscar. Oscar vs Whitaker:Oscar fought Pee after Pee was trailing on the scorecards against Hurtado and miraculously knocked the cuban out in round 11. It was a brutal ko and proved Pee had real power when he had too...however the fight proved also Pee wasn't in his prime anymore, his reflexes in that fight were partially gone and he had a bit of a belly (probably because of undertraining and drug abuse). Pee had 1 last great fight left in him but he showed seriously decline before,De la Hoya-Whitaker 1 year before would be an easy UD for Pee. Whitaker vs Quartey:cancelled because of Whitaker testing positive after the Pestriaev fight. Whitaker vs Trinidad: A mismatch,Pee was only a shadow of the boxer he once was,he was continuously cornered which in his prime would have never happened,he showed his huge heart to lose by UD with a broken jaw. Trinidad vs Quartey:cancelled because i believe Tito had a contractual dispute with Don King. This was a generation of welterweights titlists with huge potential, but the circumstances and timing of the fights were a dissapointment to me.
Tito-Oscar-Quartey Had they all fought each other in 1999, all 3 fighters will no longer be Undefeated in 2000 :deal Tito ended up with the better credentials in Welter, as he proven no Welter can stand up to his power -literally- if Oscar couldn't no one can :nono Quartey was unbeatable in 140, still excellent in Welter De La Hoya was a monster in 135 + a very good jab, possibly Mosley would have given him the fight of his life at 135
I agree somewhat, although I wouldn't say Quartey-DLH was anything close to a great fight. A great 2 rounds. Quartey being off for that long and fighting that well against an undefeated DLH shows you Ike's ability. Another era that was wasted was MW in the early 90s. Take a look at this talent pool. And look at how many fights between them actually took place. http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/The_Ring_Magazine%27s_Annual_Ratings:_Middleweight--1990s
he was so aggressive with his jab it was entertaining to watch. he was actually a bit past it for the DLH fight and had lost some of his speed by then.
Vladimir Klitschko has the best jab in boxing period. When he sits down on his jab it is harder than a normal heavyweight's right hand.............
their fight was pretty average. had one round worth talking about, the others were cautious jab and move rounds. maybe you need to go back and watch this "welterweight classic" again
