Can the deceptively tough Scot jab his way to victory,or does Williams catch up with him and put a beating on the savy Scottish boxer?
Wow. What a great fight you would have here...I guess I would pick Williams to tend to dominate a trilogy. He was probably more consistantly brilliant.
Other way round you mean. Buchanan was always in good form, Williams fluctuated. But both at their best, Buchanan just has the right package to win (just). Iron jaw, fitness through the roof, fleetness of foot, a speedy jab and good head on his shoulders.
No, I don't mean the other way around. Though I think maybe we mean slightly different things. I wouldn't like to see Buchanan matched with Williams outside of his 1970-1973 ish window of excellence. On the other hand you got Williams beating Jack and Agnott something like a decade apart. Sure he had odd moment in betweeen - almost anybody would with a schedule like that - but it's a huge number of years to be contesting at the very highest level. Buchanan is one of those rare peak type of fighters for me. For example, I wouldn't expect Watt to extend the Laguna version of Buchanan as completley as he did the post-Duran version (though Watt was a cracking fighter). If these two inhabited the same division for a decade, meeting 3 times through six years, I would expect Ike to come out on top.
Come on, when Williams last beat Jack they were both well past it. That doesn't count. He wasn't at the top level in '55. Williams had a window of about '45 to '50 where he was brilliant, some years more than others.
That's probably fair, though I might be tempted to go back a bit further - maybe to 44. Not that it matters, really. Peak for peak Buchanan could certainly beat Williams, but unless Ken is catching Williams green or old, if they were contesting the division, I would pick Ike to come out on top.
You missed my tribute post to you the other day I think. http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=94767&page=2
Great fight, great fight great fight. Two of the finest, Williams a greater lightweight by my reckoning, but not by much, Buchanan is top 10 for me. Buchanan boxes brilliantly, the level of ring generalship on his behalf was immense, but Ike will make life hell for him, goes to the wire and Ike jst bangs out a couple more points than Ken imo.
