Jack. 3. Jack swarmed inside, Williams held his own though, despite being at a disadvantage from the inside. He was eager to get Jack at long range though. Jack. 5. Williams actually was getting the better of it on the inside by this point. Jack was losing steam; he took some savage uppercuts by Ike. The round ended fantastically with Williams prevailing in a savage war. Jack was hurt several times. Man, what a round. Williams. 6. Williams rushed out and DID NEARLY KILL Beau Jack. He pounded him mercilessly, finally pinning him in the corner and throwing savage combinations to the body and head. Damn Williams was fast. He stopped and told the ref to stop it and the ref told Ike to continue. Ike did, with another furious attack, but the ref stopped it shortly after, seeing that Ike was right. It was one of the most furious finishes of all time, but Jack did finish on his feet. Verdict: Great fight, though rounds 2 & 4 are missing. The punching was surprisingly wild and inaccurate for lightweights, but the 5th round was so hectic that I think even @George Crowcroft would enjoy it. Round 6 was just such a breathtaking finish. WATCH THIS CLASSIC.
That Ref should have gone down for attempted murder ! I remember reading about Ike Williams. He created a huge impression in the UK when he came over and took apart Swansea hero Ronnie James.
I like Ike. (he's on my shortlist of welters that unquestionably trounce Floyd Mayweather - and Jack would have been very competitive himself)
Uh, don't fret, I'm pretty sure Charley Daggert's officiating days are over... (the ref, born John McGarrigle, collapsed outside the ring and passed away on 7/2/1953, per the NYT)
Wow. What a brutal affair in the sixth round. There were some really brave referees back in 1948, weren't there. I am very impressed with the quality of fighters around after WW2. It might have been the aftereffect of the Depression in the 1930's. Plus certainly the fall of the color line. Of these two, Williams looks great. Jack a somewhat limited mauler. The filmed fights between Williams and Bolanos from the same era are excellent, with both men showing a lot of skill.
That was the last era pretelevision. IMV the greatest era in boxing history from not only a depth standpoint but skills as well. TV giveth but also taketh away.
Who won this fight, William ? I’ve always regarded Ike Williams as one of the best but never saw much of him
