Some weird fall occurred. Couldn't tell if it was a slip or a KD. Ike landed a thudding right on Pruden's head, and both launch hooks, and Pruden went down. Williams. 3. Williams became more defensive, but outdid Pruden at any rate. Williams. 4. I noticed why Ike was winning and Pruden wasn't. Williams was avoiding punches. He was rolling and blocking Pruden's jabs, whereas Pruden took no such precautionary measures to avoid Ike's even more potent punches. Pruden opened a cut over Ike's left eye, and Williams assaulted Pruden very roughly. Williams. 5. Ike landed a good counter straight right early on. Williams pelted Pruden with a few solid rights and lefts as well. Pruden's right eye was opened. However, Ike's left eye is worse off than either of Pruden's eyes. Ike just took Pruden apart throughout the round, but he never staggered Pruden. Williams. 6. Pruden finally seized some initiative, forcing Williams to retreat and landing some solid but ineffectual blows. Ike remained on the backfoot for the remainder, but got the better of the punching just the same. Williams. 7. Pruden had some impressive body shots at first. Ike appeared to tire. Even. 8. Ike having his way, but Pruden backed him up with a counter right. Ike landed a hard right before the bell. Williams. 9. The two had a decent exchange at the end of the round, which Williams won. Pruden was a bloody mess. It's all in his hair, on his face, his chest, his trunks. Williams. 10. The two fought in good bursts, with Ike naturally getting the better of it. The best round. Williams. Final score: 9-0-1 for Ike. Verdict: Unimpressive performance by Williams. I thought it was a pointless contest. Ike cut up and punched up a guy that was never staggered throughout the entire 10 rounds, yet Pruden never fought back, and Williams remained untested.
Williams impressed me as clearly going backward rather badly. His defense might have been better than Fitzie's, but he took a lot of punches and ended up pretty battered. I think the handwriting was on the wall for the end of his championship reign. He would lose the title in his next fight and then become an opponent at welter. It was interesting that he was ten lbs. over the lightweight limit. As for Purden, he looked a fringe contender, journeyman type to me. That Williams took so much punishment in this one, even though winning all the way, I think was more a tipoff on Williams regression than Purden's quality. Thanks for posting.
Not knowing anything about this fight but having seen Ike before, I thought "he's not a lightweight there." He looks every bit of 145, yeah. His legs aren't there at this point. Pruden is impressively tough and just chugs forward. I kept wanting him to dig downstairs a little bit, given Williams' lack of movement and having to lug around that added weight and all.
