I know a lot of Old Timers would pick Williams, but I don't really see anybody at Lightweight breaking down Chavez. I can see some slick fighters outpointing him, and I can see a fighter like Duran beating Chavez at 135, but, I don't see anybody stopping him. Admittedly, I haven't seen much film on Williams, but at 135 and below, Chavez could really be a relentless force of nature. I certainly welcome some of the enlightened older posters to educate me on Williams. From what I know, I think this would be a fantastic see-saw battle. And I just can't pick too many people to beat Chavez who bring the fight to him.

Usually a good chin should be favoured over a good punch, but Williams was much more than a good puncher. If Chavez is to win then it will be after having walked through a torrent of leather. Williams was a brilliant combination puncher, a short puncher who could perforate defences.

Chavez would have to draw off all his savvy and strength to force Ike off balance; keep him working while smothering his best efforts. Working the body goes without saying, and then, perhaps when Ike looks for a break against the ropes, Julio could rip in the left uppercut to the mouth.

Tough as Chavez is, I think he would need to make very few mistakes as he gradually dictates the terms of the fight.

Between hitting his stride and encountering weight trouble, Williams had quite a short prime, but during that prime he was a force of nature, smashing Bob Montgomery, Beau Jack and even flooring Kid Gavilan. He was a solid boxer, possessed a nose-flattened jab and wasn't a bad counter-puncher.

I can see Chavez getting pulled out after 8-9 rounds of torrid fighting.

Yes Ted, Ike Williams at 135 pounds had a short prime, because of trouble
making 135, and being blacklisted by a managers Guild .Also Ike
Williams had to "wear the cuffs" on occasions to get work. This being said,
Ike Williams when uncuffed was the best lightweight I ever saw ringside...
Bar none ! Ike was the best of these great lightweights such as Beau Jack,
Bob Montgomery, Sammy Angott, Freddie Dawson, [so feared Dawson had to fight in Australia] , etc. Ike was feared so much that NOT ONCE did the great featherweights Willie Pep and Sandy Saddler, challenge Williams for an overweight OR title bout at lightweight... Remember folks that Pep AND Saddler met and defeated some lightweights, but NEVER had the cujones
to challenge Williams...Willie and Sandy great as they were knew how
deadly a combination puncher Ike was...They knew their limitations...

Prime Chavez isn't getting stopped by anyone, i think Williams would win a UD though.

Agreed. No lightweight in history is stopping Chavez.

But Williams is among 4 guys I'd pick over Chavez at 135... the other three are Duran, Whitaker, and Ortiz.

Chavez is the favorite over any other lightweight.

Leaning towards Williams on a tight UD by being half a step ahead of Chavez. Very tight fight here.
Duran and Arguello are the only 2 I confidently pick over JCC @ 135

Arguello? I love Alexis, but he was hardly as good as Chavez at 135. He had a tough one with Mancini, while Chavez dismantled Rosario in a one sided fight.

Chavez by clear decision over Arguello at 135.

JCC by a narrow SD/MD type of verdict although a draw wouldn’t be out of the question IMO.
