Ike, in a war for the ages. I think he would prove himself the winner in the later rounds, especially over 15. Truly a violent puncher in every sense of the word.
Haven’t seen enough of Ike Williams to make an honest judgment. But his reputation makes me think he might be a tough for for Chavez
From what I can tell, both Chavez and Arguello were probably better than Williams. He was the same kind of fighter as Arguello, just not as lengthy and with less punching power. Better hand speed, though. He and Chavez were probably similar in punching power, but he wasn’t as durable or versatile as Chavez. Seems like the myth exceeds the reality with Ike. But then, he seemed to be a great champion, so maybe it’s more the myth of his punching power rather than any overrating of him as a whole. Shame there isn’t more footage.
I'll take Williams in a brutal war. Williams threw some lovely combinations, was a very spiteful puncher with mean intentions, and a savage finisher. He seemed to exceed against fighters that come to him, as shown in his fight against Beau Jack. He also dropped granite-chinned Kid Gavilan and broke the jaw of Johnny Bratton, which makes me wonder if he'd be able to hurt and possibly stop Chavez.
He also is supposed to have hurt Angott, dropped Joyce and he stopped Montgomery. Three more granite chins.
I love Chavez, from his first fight in LA against Adrian Arreola. I love watching Ike Williams. I think that I would like this fight.
I don't really know enough about Ike, or even Julio, to make an informed judgement. And both seem quite subtle exponents of their craft so I may not appreciate all that Williams and Chavez do. So this thread has been enlightening for me. In a thread largely full of considered, fair opinions with reasonable cases being made either way, yours is probably the fairest, grey. It's good to ponder who would have won and how in match ups of fighters from different eras. I don't get why Bulldog24 seems to always decry hypotheticals as 'they didn't happen so what's the point'. For me, that is the point. But sometimes it's best to just conclude, as you have, that both were great fighters and, if they had fought, we'd have gone into it not really knowing who'd win but being pretty pleased we were there for the ride.
I like them both so much that it would make me not want to see it live because I wouldn't want to see either lose. It would be better to read the result- not the whole story- then watch the fight and see why.
I think none of the above. Much more output? What are you basing that on? Ike fought like a little Joe Louis, but he fought in a division with far more fleet footed opponents, and he didn’t have the power to knock them flat with one shot the way Louis did. Arguello had that power, but he struggled at least as much with lateral movement, if not more. Pretty similar fighters from what I can tell.
