That's true. But I'm also one of the few that bother to consistently give round-by-round breakdowns of fights, so at least I'm thorough in my madness. Much easier to just follow majority opinion and say yeah I had it for X fighter by a point or two, as many do here.

But yeah, my cards go down nicely with a grain of salt.

I agree with pretty much all that, and I'd probably even venture to say that they don't come any tougher than Ken. I'm certainly not trying to slight Buchanan by saying his defense wasn't that good, as you would know, I've defended him plenty of times here in the classic forum. I consider him the best Brit in the last 50 years. Better than Lewis, Conteh, Winstone or Calzaghe.

Battered late, but the fight was still rather close I felt. A top performance by Buchanan all the same.

Did Williams step up to fight Gavilan? I thought it was at 140??? Strange, I told myself 'can't imagine Gavilan making 140' I guess Williams weighed less.

I think Williams is an ATG LW, top 3 H2H and high up on the resume stakes; he's in my top 30 ATG P4P post-war list.

That's interesting G, I actually gave the last round to Laguna. Whilst I felt Ken was fresher by that stage, I think Laguna simply outlanded him to take it. There were a few close swing rounds in the fight but this is how I scored it:

Ismael Laguna vs. Ken Buchanan I: 144-141 Laguna
    Buchanan: 1,6,10,12,13 and 14.
    Laguna: 2,3,4,5,7,8,9,11 and 15.

Ken looked more comfortable in the second fight, for sure. Perhaps the heat made him look less that stellar in Puerto Rico.

I like Buchanan to consistently give Williams tough fights, but I think he snares very few of them. He's too hittable for me. Laguna might get blasted out of there on quite a few occasions, but he has a style that could trouble Ike, much as you say he did bother Ortiz in the first fight.

Try and get his fights with Bolanos and Jack, they are probably the easiest to come across and show Ike in his prime. There is some other past prime stuff out there as well.

I think it was more his stamina and mettle that unsettled guys than his defense. Plenty of times in fights guys do well scoring on him early and in the mid rounds but he takes the play away from them by stepping on the gas in the last third of fights. Happened in the Laguna, Navarro, Watt fights etc.

His defense isn't bad, it's quite good actually, but his determination and will to win are really, really great for me, his best assets by far. Excellent left hand too as you say.

heres my cards (i scored it twice recently)

    Buchanan: 5,6,7,10,12,13,14,15
    Laguna: 1,2,3,4,8,9,11
    Total: 143-142 Buchanan (8-7)

    Buchanan: 1,6,9,11,12,13,14,15
    Laguna: 2,3,4,5,7,8,10
    Total: 142-142 Buchanan (8-7)

it shows the early rounds were fairly clear cut to Laguna but the mid-late rounds were harder to score and were more even. Interestingly my brother had it by the same score as you but to to Buchanan

yeh thats right and thats what could have made Laguna look worse. If i remember right i had the rematch fairly wide about 10-5 Buchanan

Buchanan gives any lightweight a tough fight IMO

Ill have a look for them.

    also thanks Flea

Gavilan came in around 141 or 142, Williams weighed around 136. It wasn't a catchweight fight, according to anything I've read. Gavilan had moved up to welter from lightweight a year or two earlier, so he was technically considered a welterweight, but hadn't yet fully grown into the weight.

Thanks for clearing that up, as I thought given the time that Gavilan was already a Welter by then.

Yeah, that is a pretty damn good victory :good
