If the fight was at middleweight it might be competitive, with Calzaghe fighting dehydration.. otherwise not a smart move for Pavlik, he should stay at middleweight aslong as he can to make a legacy. Alot of pro-calzaghe fans will ***** and moan but i think if Calzaghe wants a real challenge not just a name he should fight Kessler again, the fight would resume as if it was the 13th round ie. Kessler realizing that if he imposes his aggression and strength he can be far more effective against Calzaghe rather than trying to outbox.
Look no need for bashing me mates...I've stated my opinion and theirs no need for any counter argument bigbone as our presumptions are based merely on conjecture, both have substance, I like both fighters however when it comes to Pavlik-Calzaghe I feel that you guys underrate Pavliks abilities and overrate Joes :deal Again it WOULD be a great fight and I feel the toughest test for either....Both have a high workrate, both leave themselves open at times, Joe is abit awkward, Kelly is more conventional...As I've said I can envision how either fighter could win....I pick Pavlik as I see him being the ring general throughout the fight also punishing Joe when theres an opening aside from establishing a solid, stiff jab....I combine this with my feeling that Joe can't hurt Pavlik, not even come close, despite Kelly giving Joe chances.....This is how I envision Pavlik winning I understand you may have a different vision I respect and understand that so is it so hard to treat others with different opinions or visions than your own the same?
Pavlik would be Lacy'ed That's not to say he's as bad as Lacy, but he is just as predictable and defensively flawed. Joe would take his own very good jab away from him like he did to Kessler, but using angles he will also clown him and throw a better variety of punches than the Kessler fight Late stoppage
Calzaghe would box from the outside in a rematch against Kessler and go to the body a lot more, as Kessler looked visably weaker after taking that huge body shot in the 9th or 10th (cant remember which round exactly). I dont think Kessler has the stamina to keep the 12th round tempo up either, I see it being a pretty 1 sided rematch and I'd see Pavlik and Calzaghe going a similar way, except more 1 sided in Joe's favour. He has the style to beat him pretty easily, bad style match for Pavlik.
I read on some other forum that Pavlik talked **** about Calzaghe and now he's running from him. I have no idea about any of this (and I can't imagine Kelly talking **** at all, he seems like a good bloke) but I thought it was interesting. What's the deal with that?
Find me a credible source mate not some imaginings of a Calzaghe headgiver....This is not characteristic of Kelly and I highly doubt this was said....I'm sure Kelly has the utmost respect for Joe:yep
# You've changed your tune, a couple of weeks ago you were saying Pavlik would destroy Calzaghe and that he would KO the "slapper" quite easily. What's changed?
I'm a fan of both however I get aggravated by some of the delusional and imature posters that think Joe can turn water into wine....the post you just sited is my unobstructed and nonretaliatory view...however thanks for pointing that out Strike
I've actually seen this first hand. He constantly makes things more value than they previously had: http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=46406
You said you would never return if Hopkins signed to fight Calzaghe. What are you doing here? I like you as a poster, but honor your word, beooatch:hi:
after seeing how calzaghe performed against the younger kessler and taylor verses pav in their rematch, i have odd ideas about this potential matchup. a pavlik win: kelly might get hurt or even dropped sometime early from a brazened calzaghe assault. this will in fact make pavlik more focused and determined after tasting calzaghe's best shots. and most importantly! it will make him throw a lot more punches and loosen him up. not just jabs and rights. but the nice duck and hook to the body and other creative punches he has thrown in fights. (yes kelly DOES throw some nice variety of shots, it's just that he has to be in a trading type fight where he has his blood up). i realised that despite kessler being younger than calzaghe, he didn't really have good enough stamina to throw constantly each round. and he seemed to wait for openings towards the end rather than just be busy. while kessler is a more powerful one shot puncher than pavlik, he is FAR too "clean". basically he never wanted to really get into a wild slugfest. pavlik loves a fight, and if he upsets calzaghe with his constant attack, the welshman might lose his temper which will only work against the older fighter in a long fight. calzaghe never had his stamina tested that much lately. even kessler fought at joe's pace which was a tactical slower pace that didn't reveal exactly how much the welshman has left for a full blooded war. also due to calzaghe's ability to adapt, pavlik would come back with hooks/uppercuts if his jab starts missing so joe will either have to stay on the inside which will frankly favour the guy 10 years younger who also has excellent stamina, or he will stay on the outside and try to lunge in on pavlik. remember joe is quick. quicker than taylor even BUT his reach and height is shorter than taylors, which in turn was shorter than pavliks. pavlik will be slow against joe, but the big size advantage which kessler surprisingly didn't have going into their fight, will help offset the speed. also i think it will be a case of a bridge too far for joe. i favoured kessler slightly in their matchup but i would favour pavlik even more so in another 6=12 months. you can only stay on top of your game so long before faltering. also remember kessler is quicker and better than pavlik in skills etc. but he held no real size/reach advantage over joe, and had worse stamina than i thought, and as i always prefer, throwing punches in bunches is a safer bet than looking for perfect openings. only mayweather can get away with that because he is a freak. joe simply threw more than kessler and deserved his win. fundermentals, size, desire to mix it up if needed, stamina, punches in bunches and youth will be key for kelly. a calzaghe win: i feel calzaghe will win provided the 10 year difference and dropping back down to 168 doesn't have any real impact on him. calzaghe reaffirmed in the kessler fight that his stamina, chin, skills, adaptation etc are still elite level despite being 36. however it wont be super easy for him even in a win because he will be something like 37 nearly if the fight took place, and against a fighter not only bigger and 10 years younger, but also with great stamina of his own! adaptation, experience and skills will be the key for joe. as with the kessler/calzaghe fight, i am a big calzaghe and pavlik fan and would love to see joe beat pavlik for his personal legacy. however, for the good of boxing and drawing more people to the sport, i would love the young kelly to win so there will be more great fights in the future, instead of retirement. :thumbsup
No way joe could not get close enough to get to pavlik. He might win with his slapping punches on points but only pavlik could come out with a KO
I like both fighters, but it would a huge setback for Kelly to take this fight if staying undefeated is as big a deal to him as he says. Calzaghe is the absolute worst possible matchup for him at 160 or 168. He's 25, champion, undefeated, and has the US boxing world at his fingertips...no way I'd make that match now if I were his handlers.
