Ilunga Makabu vs. Eric Fields RBR

Round 1

They give a quick sporting tap of the knuckles. Now Fields begins rowing out his jab, cautiously feeling Makabu out. Makabu shells up and shuffles backward. Makabu lays on the ropes as Fields throws combos off his jab. Extremely slow first minute by Makabu, all defense and not much variety to it. Big whipping roundhouse right hand by Fields after the jab, knocking Makabu into the ropes. Makabu is still just plodding away, leaning back with his tight guard up. Jab, jab, cross by Fields causing Makabu to nearly bend over backwards. Finally some quick counter hooks flashed out by Makabu, mostly to the body. Fields gets him to shell up again by driving in some hard jabs and the straight right to the head. Makabu block a jab thrust in as Fields charges with his lead foot landing just outside Makabu's, but takes a hard looping right hand to the ribs under his elbow. A few right jabs flicked out by Makabu.

Makabu is either playing him for a sucker with this possum stuff, or he is really shell-shocked himself by Fields' power and intensity.

Round 2

Makabu is getting pushed across the ring as Fields throws big right uppercuts from the straight vertical drop squat or a low dip over to his right. Makabu is flicking the right jab and working in a few left hand leads to stand his ground, but Fields is creaming him with power shots off the jab. BIG left hook by Fields, thrown from the nosebleed seats, easily ducked by Makabu. Fields doesn't let up, however, and forces Makabu to cede more turf.

Round 3

Makabu is putting out soft lob jabs and reaching with the left hand while leaning away. Fields covers up and catches them all on the forearms before opening back up on Makabu. They are swapping turns coming forward, nobody counter-punching. Most of their shots are failing to get through. Nice defense both ways. Body shots mixed in by Fields, scoring well. Makabu gets in a left uppercut on the inside as Fields bows into him with his arms pinned to shield his face. Fields looked hurt by that and the South Africans loved it. Quick right hand by Fields, landing flush on Makabu's nose as they begin to exchange but interrupted by the bell.

Makabu actually woke up there. Maybe the momentum will shift, now.

 

Round 4

Makabu is tanking in, arms up like pillars, as Fields loops the right hand around them and keeps pumping a hard left jab. Pause. The ref checks something on Makabu's gloves, tape maybe. Time in. Makabu drives Fields into the ropes with the overhand left on repeat. Makabu starts to rip into Fields with right hooks to body and head and dropping overhand lefts in between. Fields is looking fragile, easing off. Makabu whips the hook around Fields' wrist and buries it under his ear. Fields shoeshines the belly to push Makabu outside. Whipping right over a jab by Fields as Makabu lets himself sink into the ropes while slipping punches with his gloves down. Big right hook by Makabu, partially deflected as Fields throws a combo but Fields is left wide open for a looping left on the jaw. They're really trading now as Fields looks to get off the ropes! Both throw big power shots and Fields struggles to get his legs firm beneath him, splaying. Makabu is still cautious, throwing from mid-range while circling. The bell rings.
