End of the day, while there are certainly reasons to criticize aspects of the match-up and say that his team knew exactly what they were doing in strategically targeting Makabu based on stylistic vulnerabilities, wear & tear, etc - yes, if he goes up and knocks out a world ranker cruiser, then you have to hand it to Canelo, a natural 154lb/160lber ...that's a big achievement. Hopefully it doesn't get cheapened with any catch-weight or rehydration clause antics.

He is, at his best, a better fighter pound for pound than at least 4 of Canelo's six opponents at 168. Not to mention considerably larger.

No...I don't kiss any boxers ass the way you do. You're a pissy little 15yo girl with TOO much hero worship. None of these boxers care about us. Why do you nail yourself to a cross for your heroes?

Even with that, they'll still be a substantial size difference. Makabu could always say no if he doesn't like the terms from the A-side.

If he doesn't like the terms they'll find another Makabu quickly.

Dude, he's fighting for the WBC belt, the GREEN belt...if Okolie or Briedis had that belt, either of them would have gotten the call instead of Makabu.

You've got to admire Ginger nuts' ambition and work ethic. So many fighters these days fight once a year and show little ambition.

I'm sure he'll get all the advantages and munch on mexican beef . But I'm still impressed.

I do get your argument: he's going up quite a lot in weight, fighting a legit beltholder, so what is there to complain about?

And that argument is a fair one. Makabu may be one of the weaker cruiser champions but he is a legit beltholder and this is a far better fight than Yildirim, Khan, Kirkland or Fielding.

However, there are two legit arguments as for why not everyone is sold on this fight:
    1) Almost all fans would prefer that he tried to unify LHW instead, or went for the #1 at cruiser, i.e. Briedis.
    2) The fight is for the purpose of Canelo calling himself a 5 division champ ... but that rings a little hollow seeing that he has not taken on the best at 175 or cruiser (yet). I think that rarefied claim of being a 5-division champion means people compare Canelo to SRL, Hearns, Pacquaio, Floyd etc. which is a very high bar. And the main drawback when comparing Canelo to ATGs of that class is that his matchmaking has been "smarter" than some, i.e. his team always choose a good reward/risk ratio whereas some of those ATGs did crazy things. This does not mean avoiding good opponents or fighting cans, but it is seen in choosing Makabu over Briedis, an older Kovalev over Beterbiev, prepping himself a bit more before taking on GGG, etc.

He's taken calculated risks rather than taking completely insane risks. He and his team are no dummies, they know what they're doing and I think there's something to be said about playing it smart rather than playing it stupid. But playing it smart shoudn't be confused with trying to gain unfair advantages. I think the more we think about this fight, the more it makes sense. At first I was shocked to hear the announcement as many of us were, but the more I think about it the more it makes sense. As you alluded to, I think stylistically it's intriguing because Makabu can punch, and he's also a smaller Cruiserweight. I mean if people think it's so crazy for Canelo to move up to Cruiserweight, then it's that much crazier for him to fight an even bigger Cruiserweight like Breidis. By announcing it now, it gives Makabu plenty of extra time to prepare, 6 additional months, which will end up being a full 17 months from his last fight by the time it happens and 19 months since he's known that the weight class limit was changing to 190lb, that's plenty of time for Makabu to make 190 safely when he wasn't too far from that to begin with as a small CW.

So if we're honest, this makes a hell of a lot more sense for Canelo to be fighting Makabu rather than a full fledged 200-lb Super Cruiserweight like Breidis especially if Canelo plans on then dropping back down to defend his Undisputed at 168-lbs. At first I was shocked to hear this announcement as we all were, but the more I think about it, the more I think Canelo can pull this off and then return to 168. But I don't think this is gonna be easy for him and I don't think you can call it a cherry picking. Makabu is a legit CW Champ and having it at 190 lb makes a lot of sense for both fighters. If you think about it, it's really going to be the first real traditional weight Cruiserweight Title Fight in decades which I think carries a certain old school Cruiserweight feel to it that's been missing at Cruiserweight for a long time. 190-lbs really is True Cruiserweight and the weight that it was designed at, and I think this Super Cruiserweight experiment that's gone on over the last decade or so should respect the original limit of 190-lbs and should embrace the division returning to its roots with a fight of this magnitude. Canelo continues to find ways to make history and be a part of history by bringing Cruiserweight back to its origins and I think that both fighters should be applauded for coming together to make this happen.
