I hope people remember these words when Mayweather claims to be the best of all time in years to come.

I hope this materialistic, arrogant little man is remembered for what he truly is. A truly talented, excpetionally gifted fighter who would not take the best challenges out there, who prioritised money and image above all else.

no, no not for money. he fights the best remember? that's what ellerbe tells him anyway.

and he came back for legacy, to beat marquez and then manny right?

and he fights because he doesn't want people to forget him because boxing thrived while he was gone...now that one i actually belive

I have no problem with him saying he fights for money. In order to maximise his returns he needs to face the best opponents out there and in Sugar Shane he is fighting the number one ranked welterweight in the world.

He's just trash talking guys! don't believe the stuff that comes out of his mouth. Deep down, when all is said and done, and he looks back at his career I am sure he wants to be able to say that he achieved all he could and be remembered as one of the best ever. He just has his own way of going about it.

See I agree with this to a certain extent. I believe that he does play the pantomime villain to sell more tickets to a certain extent. But I believe it is something that comes easy to him.

I think he's an obscenely arrogant, totally materialistic human being with few redeeming qualities.

Everytime he opens his mouth he contradicts himself.

    On fighting for a title:
"I did not want to fight for the WBA title. At this point, it's all about enhancing my legacy.

    On fight for money:
"I don't fight for legacy, I don't fight for none of that. I fight for that cheque. I'm in the cheque cashing business

A shame that for such an incredibly gifted fighter, he wasn't willing to showcase it against the best. At the time of his brief retirement, the welterweight division was flaming hot with great fighters. You'd get the impression that Floyd (wanting to be the best ever) would jump at the chance to prove himself. There are fighters out there that would die for competition like this, guys like Ali, Robinson and Leonard would have fought them one after the other. Floyd however, goes in to hiding for 18 months, and waits for everyone to eliminate one another

Honestly, it's really no different than any of us doing our jobs. I don't work to better myself or to be the best that I can be. I work for the $ and that is always my motivation to do better and improve myself. I still care about the company that I work for and want it to be successful, but my number 1 career priority is myself.

Floyd doesn't have the same passion for fighting as Shane does and guys like that. That's why he was always threatening retirement and has taken a lot of time off over the past 3 years. What he realized during his time off is that he is a boxer and that is the most lucrative way for him to make a living. He is one of the most skilled boxers to even put on the gloves.

What he doesn't realize (or maybe he does) is that fans like us are passionate about the sport and don't like to hear that the best "only fights for the cheque". In reality, he does fight for the cheque but don't get it twisted; he wants to win and that is why he always does.

Every fighter fights for the check. Great fighters aren't only fighting for the check but also for legacy. Mosley is great and if Mayweather wants to be great he has to beat Mosley.

Also life isn't just about money. Once you have tens of millions of dollars, another 20-30 million isn't really going to make your life any better. After a point you end up with all the money in the world and no friends, so at what price do you sell your soul?

If you only work for the check and you dont care about being the best at what you do, it's time to get a new job.

You can't marry a check. You can't call your check your friend. Money is security and thats it and honestly if Mayweather has to keep so many body guards he's less secure than most of us so what good is his money?

I suppose his money can pay to help his family. Thats about the only thing money is for, but it doesn't help the individual who is earning it in most cases. And I'm not just talking about boxers but anybody who gets rich who is "new" money, they have the money but they don't have any of the power.

And if you have money and fame without any of the power then you end up like Mayweather with 20 bodyguards and still end up in court(potentially).
