I don't pay attention to much of what the commentators are saying, and I don't believe that pressure is all that when you're just walking forward and not putting any hurt on anyone. I did hear and take heed to what Max Kellerman said, "When I judge a fight, I base whoever won on who I would've preferred to be at the end of the round ... and for a majority of this fight, I would've liked to been Martinez." It was something to that effect and it's true ... you put yourself in the position of both fighters and you can tell who was the more effective ... I would've rather been Martinez ... because of the fact that he was "landing" the more effective punches and he was the one who didn't seem worse for wear.
I won't compare these two because of how different they are as fighters. The shots that Martinez landed were due to his boxing skill and amazing speed. Pavlik doesn't compare in these departments. Not only that but Martinez is a south paw. While I believe that Williams lost, I don't think this fight can be used to say that Pavlik would win against him. 2 completely different styles and 2 different levels of athleticism.
I"m a Williams fan and I think that he won. Outside of the 1st 4 rounds Martinez was largely ineffective and basically back peddled while trying to counter P-Will but mainly missing and getting caught, he occassionally had success but for the most part P will took over, in my honest opinion. A lot of rounds were close though so I could see the fight going either way. I think to say that one fighter was robbed is ridiculous as hell. The judges for the most part got it right except for one.
Yeah that must be true.... though I read that he hadn't lost in a 9 or 10 years that would be a hell of a KO streak.
Williams tried to bum rush Martinez at the opening bell, and ended up getting hurt and knocked down by a light middleweight with a 50% KO ratio before the round was over. Ring Magazine had PW ranked #3 at 160 after the Winky fight, and I defended that adamantly. This fight shows me I was wrong. PW is not a middleweight, and if he tried to bum rush Pavlik he would leave the ring on a stretcher. Put Pavlik and Williams in a head on collision, and Pavlik knocks him out every time!
Yes you did say that, and I cordially disagreed with you. In my opinion Williams/Martinez showed us you were right and I was wrong.
Pavlik has no business being near a paul williams. Too much speed, power, defence. Pavlik is a one-two merchant the fight is a carbon copy of kessler ward.
