because they are lacking stability muscles to squats... but it does work the leg pretty good its actually pretty functional for bikers and other athletes that need strong quads side things i notice: jazzo is an idiot on the forums as noticed from many threads and should be ignored...
He's got a strange posting style and he likes feet but he's about as far from being an idiot as you'll find on ESB. As for the leg press, I use it when I've already done some seated cable rows and I don't want to work my lower back again with full squats just to hit my legs. It obviously doesn't do as good a job allround as a squat, but it definitely promotes leg strength. Tampa; I can't run for **** either mate, and aside from squats/lunges/presses, I think the best thing you could do is to practice actual sprinting. If you're dead set on improving, that is.
Unless your a bodybuilder and hypertrophy is your goal the leg press is pointless. It doesn't help improve squats, doing squats improve squats. Also, the strength gained from leg press is pathetic compared to what you gain from full squats. Use leg press if you want, it's ok to be a *****...
You used to weight 300 lbs how are you supposed to be running any kind of explosive? Sprint more. Work your legs more.
no like i said over and over again, for certain athletes like bikers that dont need to train the stability muscles for squats, leg press is much more sport specific because it pushes your legs specificly to its max and almost promises that you wont have bad form no one ever mentioned about increasing squats in this thread, and duh isnt it obvious that it applies to everything. to improve running times you have to convert your slow twitch fibers to fast twitch fibers, like for example, cut out jogging for now and just do sprints for 3months or so, because mainly your muscle only remembers to run slowly and for a long time so you will have to switch it up
u definitley cant change your muscle fibers from fast to slow from what i have been told you have a proportion of each most ppl have around a 50/50 split and depending on genetics you have a certain quality muclse fibre
Leg press is not superior to squat in any type of training or to any type of athlete. If you have the ability to squat, which 99% of people do, you should squat. As Mark Rippetoe says - "people don't do squats because they're pussies". No need whatsoever to use leg press.
just because someone said it means its true? i would have to disagree and for a fact i know ricky hatton uses the leg press as well, i dont think a nobody like you has anyright calling him a *****. btw he said people dont squat because they are pussies does not in anyway mean people that leg press are pussies.
i am not really that good in biology but at least it will get him used to running at faster speeds and get him to stop trying to conserve energy for later(which is why i think he is running slowly)
Grab a pair of heavy boots and go hiking on very rough terrain/hills/forest areas for longer more endurance times. It might seem a little silly to you, but it will definitely strengthen the legs enough to prepare your body for running. Exercises like side to sides with a crate, box jumps, hindu squats, barbell squats, and sprints are all great additions after that. Muscle Fibers are genetically linked to who you are, they are split and broken down simply as: #1 slow-twitch and #2 fast-twitch. There's more to it than just that, but don't get too caught up in the science of it, just work out hard and challenge your body. You always want proper form in lifting as your first priority. 3X10 lighter quality reps are better than 3X5 heavier horrible ones. Try to do a stiff legged deadlift with bad form, you'll be out for a while. Anyways off the topic now to the other rants on this thread... If you want to get technical, leg press/extension/curls are ALL almost useless as for as functional strength goes. I just read another good article on this recently about how this one guy was able to leg press more than any of the top powerlifters in the country, but ranked on the same level as the gym rat when it came to the standard back squat. The bottom line is you pretty much always want to pick compound non-machine weights over anything else. Towel pullups are better than forearm curls, chinups are better than bicep curls, farmers walks are better than shrugs, regular pullups are better than lat pulldowns, etc. It doesn't mean they are any funner or make you look better, they just translate better to everyday activities.
This may sound cruel or harsh. But really, some people just simply are slow ass runners. Some people will never be boxers. Others I guarantee you, not mathematicians. Welcome to the human race. Enjoy your stay.
Pretty much. People use leg press because squats are hard and you can't use as much weight. If you want to look cool use lots of weight on leg press, get lots of women that way :rofl This means absolutely **** all to me. I seen him using the leg press, about 6 20kg plates each side moving about 3 inches. Pointless. And yes Rippetoe is calling him a *****. Leg press is the very poor substitute for squats. So yes they are.
Everyone has a good point. I still think that you can still be explosive and run long distance. I have always been very explosive. i think but i do sprint training and i run 3 miles 3 times a week. I would say that trainning sprinting is probbely the best thing to do. I don't think that squats and weighted squats are that good thats just my personal oppinion, i would say that explosive jumps are very good for explosivness. Thats just works for me it doesn't mean it will work for you. Good luck.
