Wlad did what he can and normally does. Even a young prime Wlad was never an all out type when he got his opponents hurt or outclassed. He is always calculating and wary of incoming shots. He is an intelligent man who thinks too much and knew his own strength and weakness. I think deep down he knew he can be easily hurt and knew that he doesn't have the lung for quick offensive outburst like Lennox pouring on Golota. AJ as most African American heavyweights are better in this regard. With Wlad it's either one shot or cautious accumulation of big punches at his own pace. When he is over anxious to end things, most of the time he smoother his own work. He did try to take Joshua's head off with the leaping hooks, but credit to Joshua who came prepare and take that weapon away. All in all great performance by both. I'm a bit disappointed for the old man, but maybe it's best for the sport.
Joshua looked more vulnerable to be taken out in the 5th round to me. Looked out on his feet and at one point looked away from wlad. I thought Wlad outboxed him for most of the fight and should have been ahead on all cards. I wouldn't mind seeing a rematch. Another thing, don't ever question Wlad's heart again.
Wlad went for the low-risk option. Outbox and win the decision. Joshua got his second wind, which was impressive given his size and the fact that he was hurt, and knocked him out. Wlad took a chance and in hindsight, he should have blown his load on the KO.
That's age. He tried, but was a little too slow and predictable with those lead left hooks. Maybe should have set those up better, but credit to Joshua for slipping a lot of that.
That was pissing me off so bad lol. I was yelling for Wlad to commit to short crosses, almost all his success came from it, but he kept trying that ineffective lead hook... was driving me crazy.
I was mad after the fight for the same reasons, but looking back on it, AJ really did look spent Im sure Wlad felt it was just a matter of time at that point. Im more mad at him not utilizing his cross more and not clinching in the 11th. Probably the only time ill ever say im mad at wlad for not clinching.
In the 5th round, Joshua had him badly badly hurt and Wlad tried clinching him but he kept getting nailed with shots until he fell face first after a few more seconds. He couldn't clinch him at all because of Joshua's workrate. At that point, I'm not entirely sure he had enough to actually clinch Joshua (Who weighed around 250-265 on fight night) especially after a good number of brutal rounds. Plus, he was cut, dazed by that massive uppercut he was nailed with. Clinching a man as big as Joshua especially when you're tired, both guys sweating profusely, much more difficult I reckon. Hard to tell, but I think he probably gave it a go but didn't think that he was going to be able to at that point. Tried fighting back but it wasn't enough. A great effort though in the 11th, that uppercut looked as bad as the first Pryor/Arguello one, Wlad's head looked like it was gonna fly off his neck. That shot was massive.
Even when aj was out on his feet he could still see that left hook coming a mile off, took that left hook away from wlad completely...think that was what won aj the fight
