I'm becoming fascinated with Carlos Monzon

Monzon is perhaps the coolest guy who ever lived, but he was a ****ing phsyco.

Love that quote from that BN article saying he was throwing oranges at passerbys, cracks me up every time

 

Its great to see some apprciation for the mighty Monzon .. There are no books on him, no DVDs on him and seemingly very little acclaim in boxing circles compared to other great fighters ..
Maybe its because he was a maniac outside the ring and the boxing establishment would rather forget about him than hold him up as a stellar champion.
He was as cold as ice, with the menace of a James Bond villain. No razzle dazzle but just a brilliant, consistant fighter and for me the greatest Middleweight champion of all time ..

I can envisage certain fighters beating him but only the very best operators, Jones Jr would give anybody in history a severe problem and hes a vastly under-appreciated phenomenon of the sport .. I also think Greb would give Monzon serious hell, but with Greb, trying to seperate the mythology from the real story is hard, but all the things i've read on Greb's style, stamina and punching lead me to think that he would be hell for anybody at 160 ..

 

He hardly comes under the 'what a guy' banner. He was a dick.

Me too. I've been fascinated with his life story for about 20 years, he (and Ali) were the main people i've seeked articles on in this time, hence the reason I have hundreds. :thumbsup

 

Monzon is a mass of contradictions

My lad got into trouble for throwing an apple out the window at school and hitting a teacher, he was only 8 lol. I'll have to keep those Monzon stories out of his reach.
