Thought this was interesting, like most boxers a bit of respect for his peers. "He was friendly only with the elite of the elite. He had a soft spot for Bennie Briscoe and always greeted his arch-rival with a big smile and firm handshake".
As great a fan of Monzon as I am, I'm not sure if I would have wanted to meet him or not...maybe to catch him in a good mood.
After losing to Monzon on a tko, Jones would be talking about how dirty a fighter he was, because I'm sure a thumb would have made contact with an eye. But that would have had little to do with the beating he'd get.
Right..it probably would have been a disillusioning experience...he's one of the boxing heroes I have that probably, in his heyday, would have been best to admire from afar, although if you did meet him, you might cop a strange Mickey Rourke type of deal, and be flattered at being hit by him.
I remember reading that Monzon once beat up a messenger sent to him by a promoter with whom he was negotiating. A punch in the face was Monzon's answer to an insulting offer. I don't know if it's true, but it's what I read.
Cheers. i've just found a spare copy of that Boxing News Middleton vs Quarry, I'll have to pm that lad who was looking for it.
Probably because Bennie rocked his ****ing world and hurt him just as bad if not worse then anyone else. :good
