Kellerman is okay, but he lacks the journalistic extincts (and old drunkard demeanor) to be as interesting as Larry.

Retirement form a job like this is basically conceding to death. No reason to retire if you're living the dream, IMO.

DEspite this being a Merchant thread you can sense it's an excuse for Floyd nuthugging for some.

Merchant's interview of Floyd after the Ortiz fight was absolutely spot on, a great piece of sports journalism. He reflected the same disgust that the average fan who forked out $ to watch something more reminiscing a WWE match than championship boxing. The sucker punch, the choice of opponent, you only have to watch the pre-fight press conference to see Ortiz was not interested in beating Mayweather, just wanted the money.

And Merchant wanted Mayweather to respond to that. Mayweather being the egomaniac he is, couldn't handle being criticised and basically started ranting and raving at an 80+ year old - Merchant's comeback was brilliant. Floyd is a disgrace.

Larry Merchant sure did waffle a lot but he'll be missed. His chemistry with Foreman was brilliant

 

Larry Merchant used to be a good commentator. He was more impartial when he was younger. He has turned into a bitter old man, and you could tell when he had a disdain for certain fighters. That is not good in his line of work. I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did.

 

I think so also. It was odd how it came up so fast after so many years, although when Kellerman came in a few years ago you could see the writing on the wall.

 

It's not a firing, it's just called not renewing his contract.

I doubt it... He's like 80 years old! Im sure it was his idea to hang up the Microphone.. He also said he would comeback for special events. Doesn't sound like someone who is being pushed out..

 

They have been fading Larry Merchant out for the past two or three years. They have been fading Max kellerman in as they have faded Larry Merchant out. And as stated earlier, was very mutual.

 

My father and mother dislike Mayweather. And my Father and Mother hate Larry more than I do.
