Guess it a catch 22. On the one hand he shows heart for taking on a big challenge and coming down in weight. Then on the other hand he didn't take his whooping like a man and instead told the ref he wanted to quit. Which one do you respect?:think

When Ortiz quit against maidana saying he didn't want no more, he got totally shitted on, yet Dawson gets a pass?

An fan who was at the fight posted this on another boxing forum -

I spoke briefly with Steve Smoger after the fight and asked him what dawson said before he stopped the fight... He asked chad "what do you want me to do?" and chad said " get me the f*ck outta here."

Honestly I think im one of the few who supported Ortiz in both times he stayed on his stool.

Vs Maidana he was taking a concussive beating but was still trying to put up a fight whilst against Lopez he suffered a broken jaw

Dawson on the other hand got put down and instead of fighting back chose to switch off and just plod along whilst Ward did all the work and then when he touched canvas again he chose to quit in the round rather than see it to the bell with only 2 more rounds remaining but this is nothing new from him. I expected him to switch off but expected him to put up more of a fight but he did nothing at all . . . . on the other hand its always quite funny to see Gary Shaw eat crow

I don't see any shame in him quitting. He was having no success and had a lot of balls to take the fight in the first place. It's not like he quit early- wasn't it the ninth round? He was miles behind on points

Look who's giving thumbs up for respect when he was the same guy who laughed at phone with his "Girlfriend" of Bute for doing about the same thing taking the big risk fight in enemy territory despite him being the champion.
    **** of you hypocrite!

Disagree. I don't think he quit. I think he had nothing left, at the end of the day, we weren't in the ring taking the punches and feeling the effects. His legs must have felt weak, plus he probably had no energy

He got up from the knockdown didnt he? and it wasnt some pansy assed ref either, it was Smoger for crying out loud!

Smoger asked him if he wanted to continue when he was on his feet, Dawson said no. A lot of fighters (even ones on a lower level) would have said yeah im fine let me continue and would have at least tried to continue the fight

    He did quit, thats irrefutable

He didn't quit, he had practically nothing left to give except his life, He was taking a right beating. He saved himself health. He had no energy, Legs were gone.

Taking a beating from possibly the lightest hitting supermiddleweight in the division? as skilled as Ward is he is hardly known to be a beast has he?

He was up, he could hold his hands up, he wasnt cut badly, the knockdowns were more stumbles than anything. He could have continued if he wanted to and if he had nothing left then Smoger would have stepped in but he didnt even try at any point in the fight.

    He quit seriously

Taking nothing away from Ward, who was typically brilliant. But Dawson was indeed like a zombi

I take nothing away from him either, he actually looked better than he has in any previous fights

Only grudge I have is that he leans in with his head purposely, Holds on and dragged Dawson down in weight that he looked like that guy from Land of the dead

Unimpressed. Weight really played a factor...no denying that...I'm a Ward fan but I'm being honest...yes he never asked for 168 but even Floyd Mayweather has given concessions to many fighters when he was the MAIN attraction: Hatton, Cotto, Pacquiao.

Give the guy a break. He was coming down to a weight which he'd NEVER had a competitive fight at, he was miles behind on the cards and had been knocked down 3 times.

Sometimes you've just got to know when you're beaten and there's **** all point in staying in there just to take punishment. Granted, Ward isn't the kind of guy to cause permanent physical damage to a man but in boxing you never know. Accept you've been beaten by a better man, get out of there, regroup and move on to the next guy. Boxing is a dangerous sport.
