Best win: Contreversial win over Shane Mosley; 7 years past his prime. No KO power. One punch at a time. Next biggest win: Zab Judah; 4 recent losses, hadn't won a fight in three bouts going into the fight with Cotto; highly undisciplined; gate keeper at best. Next best win: Carlos Quintana; Got lucky against Paul Williams....Rematch comfirmed this Everyone else was a has been, never was, or prospect. Malignaggi, Urkal, Pinto, N'Dou etc... Soild B- guys. People here were comparing him to Trinidad, some said he would beat Trinidad, others said he was PR top 5. Some had him P4P #1!! Many at #2. Anyone can look like Prime Tyson against a Gomez, Pinto, Corley, etc.... Against slightly higher comp, he got a contreversial against Mosley and KO against Margarito.
This man was #2 and even #1 P4P on some lists, yet hadn't beat anyone aside a contreversial win against a way past prime Mosley, who had no KO power and threw one punch at a time since 2002.
When people say he would beat Floyd, Trinidad, De La Hoya prime for prime and they have him at #1 and #2 P4P and his greatest accomplishments are alphabet belts, a contreversial win against Mosley, and beating Judah. Yes, he is overrated.
Anyone saying he was better than Tito is delusional. Tito is on another level to Cotto completely and that should be obvious to anyone even before last nights fight. You will always get nut huggers who over hype fighters and haters who clearly underrate fighters. Both make wild claims with no facts or logical argument to back up their random statements. Fact is there has always been doubt by many fans on how good Cotto really is and we shouldn't have are perspectives altered by the perceptions of a few fanboys. Cotto last night went up in my estimation he proved to be a much more skillful boxer than I had previously given him credit for. I always thought he was a bit 1 dimensional but he showed he could box as well as walk opponents down.
Who else has he beaten? It would seem your criteria for rating fighters is fairly weak & is probably based around your preferences as opposed to any kind of objective rational. Weren't you the one telling me to go to sleep earlier? I suggest you stop posting for a while & come back when you have some sensible arguments as opposed to the rantings of an angst filled teen.
Not overrated imo. Beat Mosley in non-controversial fashion and just got beat by the better man tonight. my opinion.
Cotto is a good fighter, but his image and identity as the heir apparent to the Puerto Rican throne could make anyone starstruck and swept up in the hype. When you actually weigh the content of his performances, and his actual tools and technique against the reputation he developed, of course he was overrated. Perhaps one of the most overrated fighters in recent history. Who else could get that much credit for beating a completely shopworn Mosley who fought on equal terms with super shot Vargas, and a lifeless Judah who had been spanked by Baldomir just prior? Nobody? Cotto benefitted tremendously from all the dissenters out there that said he would lose this fight, and lose that fight, after the Torres affair. This somehow turned Cotto into a very strange enigma, which was based primarily on people's lowered expectations, resulting in his "surprising" rise to prominence against fighters who were seemingly far better than he was. Example: 'Cotto was supposed to lose to Quintana, but then he destroyed him.' Nobody was really using their heads or thinking straight. There were different rules and standards for Cotto for some reason. Rules and standards that were different for anyone else.
