I just don't see p4p material here guys. See this is the problem with you boxing fans you see mikey brutally knock out tomato cans like dejan zlaticn and you hype the guy up to the moon. I just don't see any great career defining wins, broner was never A level and is already washed up. IDK, roman martinez? Who dropped mikey hard, lomachenko toyed with that guy. Salido? Didn't mikey break his nose and say no mas in the corner? it just isn't adding up
I am still waiting to be sold on Mikey. Not saying hes not what people say, but I havent really seen it yet tbh. Out of all the things that really make me think maybe Mikey is as good as people say, is that Mayweather thinks so highly of him. Could be the promoter in him trying to keep that bridge warm in case Mikey ever wants to sign.... but other than that, I think Mikey is kinda just a real good boxer puncher with very nice precision and power. But this p4p beast hes being made out to be? Eh... not seeing it. I look forward to when he fights an opponent that will help reveal his true level though.
Mikey is clearly a talent, and has looked hella impressive. But You guys are right, he needs to fight the best opposition available so we can properly rate him. He was so inactive for so long, and now it seems he's taking the slow train to stardom. Why he refuses a promoter to make him into a star is beyond me.
TBH, I really don't think he needs a promoter, actually I think it would be somewhat foolish of him to sign with one. He is obviously very talented and very skilled and he can bang. And, he's Mexican-American, all he ever had to do to get a fan base was show some promise, talent, and skill against some good opponents, which he has more than done, and viola! ready-made loyal and huge fan base in a box. And he's Robert Garcia's younger brother, oh, and Robert is his trainer too. And he gets a lot of free media play on YT and other social media sites from guys like Ellie Seckback who are always hanging around the gym asking him and his brother stupid questions. At this point in time, his resume isn't world-beating but it's good, especially with where he is at in his career and he has decisively beat pretty much everyone put in front of him so far in the pro ranks. Right now his resume isn't p4p top 10 type material, but he destroys the eye test and has brutally destroyed and toyed with plenty of good to very good fighters. So while he hasn't fought an opponent yet that officially graduates him into true "A-class" fighters, he has clowned good to very good fighters and looked more impressive and more skilled doing it than some other world-class boxers. In modern-day boxing, who really has a resume that screams "p4p top 10?" I mean, there are some fighters out there that have fought very good to excellent competition consistently and for a while, but not many. If his resume is all that is holding him back from being on some p4p top 10 lists, that's definitely cool and not wrong, we all value different things more than others. Personally, after having seen about 5 of his fights against B-level fighters, I'm already convinced he's an absolute stud and legit p4p beast for the forseeable future if he wants it.
Zlaticanan is a good fighter, he was just massively undersized for Mikey. Same thing with Rigondeaux vs Lomachenko or Gamboa vs Crawford. Good fighters but 3 inches shorter than the guys they were fighting.
His a better fighter but his career is very similar to broner where his moving threw the weights picking up titles against average/poor champions so he can be a multi weight champion his gotta up his level of opponents for all the fights his had
Because it wasn't that impressive, you'd have to be an idiot to face first walk down a heavy handed counter puncher. Which is why I picked Mikey by brutal early KO.
Resume is only one factor. How you beat guys is another. Mikey has looked really impressive in all his fights except the Salido fight and maybe the Broner fight. He couldve at least gone for the KO in the Broner fight.
Mikey is good but as several have states here, his resume isn't that impressive. Loma's resume is a lot better with much less fights.
I think he still looked very impressive against Salido, I mean he did drop him 4 times, but that fight left me with some pretty serious unanswered questions about he as a fighter and his psyche as a fighter. He dominated the fight as much as a fighter can while simultaneously leaving you with an uneasy feeling about him and his mental state as a fighter. To make matters worse, it's not like Salido even really landed many if any meaningful shots, he just wouldn't stay down. I'm hoping that was a "Mikey off night" because he's impressed the hell out of me every other time I've seen him. If my fears turn out to be correct, and he can be mentally shattered just by a fighter getting off the canvas every time he is dropped and coming forward no matter what, he's obviously not achieving greatness.
There just really aren't any big names out there anymore. So given the current crop of fighters, he is absolutely one of the best in the sport.
