I'm coming over from the uk to do a road trip from Chicago to Boston. I'm hoping to catch a day or 2 of the induction weekend. Has anyone got any tips on which days are best, what are the best opportunity to meet fighters or anything to make it as memorable as possible for my 13 year old son who will be with me. Also can I purchase tickets on the day,I've been advised I can,but don't want to miss out if not
It's been many years since I've been there, but from what i remember you might want to get a motel in near by Syracuse the night before which would be Friday. It is about 26 miles away. Saturday morning around 10 or 11am there is a memorabilia show in the Gym at the local high school very close to the Museum, which is alot of fun. There is some current and former boxers that attend and sign autographs. There is usually a live television show going on in front of the museum under the over hang, interviewing boxers from the past. In the late afternoon there is a banquet under the over hang. I believe you have to buy tickets to attend. After the banquet there usually some kind of big ppv fight being shown live at Graziano's bar and grill across the street from the museum. That is the best place to hang out with all the legends watching the big fight. Essentially hanging out watching boxing with famous former boxers and some current boxers. Then If i remember correctly, on Sunday the enductees get a cast made of the fists, then later a small parade of champions coming down the main street. So, i would say show up friday night and leave sunday afternoon. And of coarse the museum is alot of fun too.
Gosh that sounds awesome. Hope you have a great time with your son. Also, watching boxing at a bar with former boxers sounds absolutely insane.
Saturday is probably your best bet to meet the boxers. I have been to Canastota a few times, and, have been fortunate enough to chat with many boxing legends like Marvin Hagler, Julian Jackson, Iran Barkley, Shane Moseley, Donald Curry, David Benavidez, and Michael Moorer, among others. I ended up driving Marvin Johnson and his cousin to the cocktail party. The cocktail party and the banquet are your best bets to meet fighters now that Graziano's has regrettably closed its doors for good. But, you will likely need to get tickets to those events ahead of time. They usually sell out.
