I don't care for the shoulder roll myself. It feels more like a trap move, using it when I know he's gonna throw a particular punch from the pattern of combos he normally uses. Most of the time it doesn't work and even when the shot does glance and it puts him off balance, I feel awkward firing back from the foot position I'm in. It's really more of an advanced move. You need to focus on slipping and weaving first as your basic dodge movements.
There's no shortcut for experience. And now for my controversial comment: learn what works for you e.g. my "incorrect" ducking technique kept me from getting hit. My correct ducking technique nearly got me hit on the upper portion of my head every time.
