Ok Im a southpaw and against an orthodox it feels like Im throwing a flurry of punches at his head and hes throwing them at mine then our hands/gloves our colliding with each others hands/gloves mid punch and no ones landing cleanly, and if some one does land a punch to my face I do a crazy noob slip which involves getting my head out the way in a fear reaction type of way completely not slipping properly because it feels like I will get hit if I try to slip the proper way. Anyway how do I stop fighting like a woman/ having this horrible mess of ineffective offense and defense? I just dont know how to do it/ learn it!
Experience and practice. Simple as that. What exactly are you expecting to happen at first? You're not going to enter the ring and throw punches and land like a pro.
listen!!!!! bocxing takes time. my advice is first learn footwork, then when u spar, try to learns your distance. trow jabs in bunches. Everytime your opponent just makes a little move just trow the jab at him.EVERY time. That way u learn to take full control of your opponent. every time he takes a step against u, just take a step back with hin,so he feels that he can never reach u. the he will try to overcommt, and u have all the space u need to counter.. start a combination with the jab,and finish it with the jab. when it comes to defence, just stick to the basig in the beggining, like high guard and catcing punches. and dont fall in to the mistake of many beginners of not throwing back right after catching a shot. if u just catch shotsh and not fire back right away, your reflecses will be trained to just catch and nt fire back wuickly. that way you will make boxing alot harder to learn than it needs to be. and listen to your trainer, thats what his there for. good luck!!!!!
I love how candid you are with your experiences. Don't lose confidence - it's all part of learning. I don't know if i agree with Jeff's comment completely, but there's some truth to it. Forgetting technique and just fighting has its advantages. Personally, I think your problem is getting over the fear and emotion and adrenaline, and just calm down. Much of your issues would be resolved if you were more relaxed and actually thinking about what you're doing rather than panicking. We can give you tons of advice about technique, but I think first thing's first - get your mind right. Fight smart, think about your shots and look for openings before throwing. Make sure your spacing is right. Think about combos. When I was starting out, visualization helped me big time with relaxing and thinking about how I want to fight. Take 10 minutes before you hit the gym. Actually close your eyes and picture yourself as a relaxed fighter, not scared of getting hit, and having excellent defense. Go through the motions in your mind, based on how your partner fights and how you'd like to fight. Then try to do that in the ring. Sounds cliche, and stupid I know. But visualization helps a lot.
Brilliant thanks mate I will definitely try that, alot of great athletes use visualization so I definitely believe in your advice! Kind regards!
Cheers Tony mate I really appreciate your advice and help, that really sounds like it will work well, cant wait to try it!
:fight lol No but seriously, take your time, don't rush into sparring and mostly you gotta stay hungry.
You have a fear of being hit, lucky for me I was in dozens of street and school fights before I started sparring so had been clocked before and had no fear of being hit because I knew anything short of a big hayemaker doesn't hurt until later. Practice just defense, where your sparring partner can hit you all he wants and you can;t hit back, do drills, throw in counters but most of all take it slow, the goal of this is not for him to try to hurt you but to hit you just lightly if he does touch you so you lose your fear. Ittakes a long time, andI've seen top quality champs freeze up from fear too, just try to be relaxed and learn better defense. Have an answer for a way to block every punch and u will lose your fear until then you will keep being scared.
man boxing is very unnatural movements everyone is akward at first u cant learn to box overnight. it takes a lot of time dont give up!
