White on Fedor: We tried everything Options: This content is protected Email Article | This content is protected Printer Friendly This content is protected Friday, July 31, 2009 by Joe Hall ( This content is protected ) 18850 On the morning of negotiations with M-1 Global and Fedor Emelianenko, Dana White didnt just wake with a good feeling. The UFC president says he knew he was going to sign the top-ranked heavyweight in the world. This is going to happen, White said he told UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta. Its going to happen today. Were going to make this thing happen. Days later, however, Emelianenko is back in Russia and still outside the UFC. White was adamant during a media conference call Friday that the fault belongs to M-1 Global. I was f---ing miserable, miserable because we couldnt make this deal, White said. I was so confident we were going to get this done because we were willing to do it. We were willing to make a deal at almost any cost. The almost involves co-promoting. White said he wont do a deal that includes co-promotion, and M-1 Global President Vadim Finkelstein has said he wont do one that excludes it. We built this business, this entire freaking industry, White said. How are they going to come in and help us co-promote? Its basically them coming and saying, Weve got this guy and some people say he might be the best heavyweight in the world. So for that, we want half your business. Yeah, OK. That sh-t probably works in Russia. Not here. White added that the Fertittas gaming license would hinder co-promoting with M-1. People from other countries just dont walk in and jump in business with the Fertitta brothers, he said. There has to be full background checks and all kinds of crazy sh-t. It doesnt work that way. Its impossible; it will never happen. Other than co-promotion, White said he had relented on previous sticking points such as allowing Emelianenko to compete in sambo tournaments. He characterized himself as the nicest Dana ever during negotiations and described his offer to Emelianenko as amazing. No figures were discussed, but White guaranteed the Russian would not be offered a better deal. He got offered a f---ing assload of money, White said. A ton of money, everything he wanted. He can go fight in sambo every f---ing Thursday night if he wants to. He can do everything he wanted to. We showed them nothing but respect. White sounded equal parts angry and exasperated Friday. He had said he didnt want to discuss Emelianenko but then did numerous times over the hour-long call. Its insanity to turn down a deal like this, White said. To turn down a deal like this, you dont care about proving youre the best in the world. You dont want to fight the best in the world. You dont care about money. How do you deal with something like that? Several times White reiterated that the door to a deal was still open, then he kind of closed it by saying he was over the deal and didnt want to discuss Emelianenko anymore, then he opened it again by saying M-1 could call him right then and they could reach an agreement if theyd budge on co-promoting. By the calls end White was back to questioning Emelianenkos status as the best in the world and wondering why the media cares so much about a heavyweight who will not challenge himself in the sports top promotion. In that way, the UFC wagons have circled. Might as well. M-1s are going round and round, too, and against everything Dana White was certain of when he woke one morning this week, Fedor Emelianenko is still not in the UFC.
I just hope that Fedor isnt experiencing the Floyd syndrome of not wanting to lose his 0. I wouldnt think so he seems to be a stand up guy. But why is Vadim asking the impossible other than to blow the deal.
Dana should suck it up and let him be cross promoted. Clearly he feels Fedor will beat Lesnar if he's worried about cross promotion.
He already explained why he can't cross promote. And even if he could, why would anyone in their right mind do this when UFC 100 did 1.7 PPV buys.
I doubt it's about the fighting. I don't think their is anyone in the UFC that they are worried about. I know it's business, and from a business stand point, Dana really dug his pockets. He's never been a Fedor fan and really went all out to get him just because he knows everyone else likes him. This is very strange:-(
I agree, for all we knowDana is content to get his top guys destroyed by Fedor as long as he can sign him. Dana offered him far and beyond anyone (Randy, Chuck). Fedor and his camp cant possibly justify this. And Dana made an interesting point, he trapped Fedor by saying that if it aint about the money, then fight the best (Brock)..now if its about the money heres 30 ****in million..what else do you want?
Agreed. How the hell do you turn down 30 million from the biggest organization and biggest stage and he'd probably kill everyone and make an even bigger name for himselfatsch Who the hell in UFC history or even MMA has made anything even close to that? Tito, Randy, Chuck, Forrest, hell even Lesnar never got that ****. First it was about Fedor not being able to compete in sambo, now they give that to him plus 30 million dollars, and M-1 wants to keep screwing around. Fu*k M-1!!:fire
30m is a rumor and probably a lie. Only way this will work i think is to sign him to a 1 or 2 fight deal..not 6+ ****ing fights
Have you not been reading? It doesnt matter if its a dollar of 100 million. M1 wants to co promote and that is just a very stupid thing to ask for when you are bringing 1 fighter against the biggest MMA promotion in history who sold 1.7m buys just last month. I cant stand Dana White but he is right.
I'm a big Fedor fan but I think Dana White did everything possible to make this happen. Fedor himself said it was a good offer and if this offer was available 2 years ago after Pride he would've taken it.
From what I've heard Dana's even willing to let Fedor advertise M-1 with clothes banner's etc, UFC advertising another promotion (besides WEC) is unheard of, M-1 should have been happy with that. It's starting to look bad for Fedor...
Interview with Finkelstein, good information, good interview. Clarifies the way M-1 global does contracts with Fedor, pretty much the way I thought it was. I kind of gained respect for Finkel after this interview also. I think that him and UFC are both right in their own accord but they just can't make it work together. Unfortunate for the fans. http://sherdog.com/videos/recent/Finkelstein-on-UFC-Talks-Fedors-Future-2034
Wow! He said that? then maybe he just really wants to fight a couple of more times. You think this could present a rift between M1 and Fedor
