Ever since I started sparring with 10oz gloves this year I can't get back to being comfortable with 12oz or bigger gloves anymore. It literally feels like wearing pillows on your hands and my speed is slower. That's one thing I don't like about amateur boxing. I think that fighting with 10oz gloves really increases your technical abilities, you have to rely more on your movement and slipping/ducking punches instead of covering yourself with pillows. If you have a good sparring partner who knows to hold back a bit it's usually a great technical sparring where you really focus on your defense as you became more aware of your opponent's power and speed. You don't just go blasting at each other but try to set up the attacks and be defensively responsible. I read that a lot of people are opposed to sparring with small gloves and in many gyms it's some sort of rule that you spar with big gloves. Since big gloves are also mandatory in amateur fights I wonder how many people here who train boxing have actually fought/sparred with 10oz gloves. Personally I had some good gym wars with 10oz gloves and it's really hard to go back to bigger gloves, you feel a lot more limited. Believe me, it's a huge difference. But since I'm preparing for amateur fights it will be hard to get used to 12oz again.
Haha I train and spar in 16oz gloves which I hate But I know for me at least when I go down to 12's I feel a lot faster and like I can hit harder(whether I can or not it feels like I do)
Big gloves ruin boxing defensively, offensively and physically. Smaller gloves would result in less fighters covering up behind pillows thus having to use more sophisticated methods of defence. It will also allow ththe boxer to hit harder through increased accuracy and fighters would thus take less damage. Any bigger than 8-10oz becomes ridiculous. Smaller gloves also force boxers to punch properly. Too many boxers don't clench their fists or have a solid wrist as they expect the glove to do all the work.
I agree with everything said so far by everyone. I use 14 oz and I hate it...but it's a lesson learned. I read that using gloves bigger than what you fight in throws your timing off too. Edit: I also believe that the brand of the glove matters too. I know for a fact that everlast's cheaper "pro style" gloves are just bigger room for hand, not more protection. My hand slides around a a big when I throw a fast jab. It's annoying and ruins the workout.
To be honest, for me I hate them too but what I believe is better is condition urself with it first and make sure everything for techniques is on point then switch to smaller gloves. I always switch to 12's when there's 2 weeks from a fight The one problem I have with smaller gloves is protection, my hands wear out
