I've always thought this guy was a lot better than his record indicated, and last night's brutal KO win over Helenius should shoot him up the rankings to a top fifteen spot at least. Washington really isn't a bad fighter, but he had the misfortune to get in the ring with one of the biggest punchers in the game (getting stopped in a fight he was winning), and then get in the ring with two massive juice heads in Miller and Kownacki, getting steamrolled in the process. For my money he's at least as good as his stablemate Breazeale, and a quality fighter in his own right, with a crisp jab, good combinations, and pretty decent footwork for a big man. Of course, Helenius was clearly a shadow of his former self, but that shouldn't totally invalidate the win, and hopefully Washington can stay in the mix for a few more years as another solid US addition to the division. He'd be a great next fight for Joe Joyce IMO.
Knocking out Robert Helenius in 2019 is enough for him to be among the top fifteen at least ? If you mean in the phoney lists of the sanctioning bodies, yeah, anything (or nothing) can get you ranked in those. In a rational, non-political top 15, no chance.
I agee washington should get more credit. he crumbles under pressure bigtime though. Helenius was in the fight and maybe even beating him with his left hand only, cause we all know helenius right hand is shot to bits since the chisora fight, rarely even uses it and when he does it has no accuracy and power in it whatsoever.
Sorry, but Washington is not a good fighter, especially given his natural size. He should be much better than he is. He's not tough and he fights off his back foot. No power behind his punches. Who cares if he KO'd Helenius. He was a nobody. Kownacki wrecked him. Beat the crap out of him and though I like Kownacki, he is no world beater. Very solid but very hittable.
Kownacki was likely on a ton of gear though given what we now know about his stablemate Miller, and the fact that he fights in a very similar style at a similarly atypical condition. I don't really blame Washington for either of those two losses, and he even succeeded in stunning Miller in their fight. I don't think Washington is ever going to be more than what he is, but boxing isn't always about the top guys, and I just thought it'd be nice to give one of the lesser considered fighters a bit of recognition.
Its quite astounding what he has reach professionally while working a day job most of his pro career. I recall reading he worked in a regional Fed bank as a technician, at least up until a few years ago. Guys like Helenius on the other hand were pampered and taken care of 24/7 for years and look how little he made out of it.
Stop with this nonsense. A fight that he was winning? It was a 12 round fight and he couldn't make it to the half way point. What exactly was he winning? The early rounds? Wilder got into his groove in the 4th and finished it in the 5th. Washington is a decent boxer but his biggest problem is his stamina. I believe due to his bad conditioning he has picked up a lot of defensive flaws. Same thing with Bermane Stiverne. When you see Stiverne working in the gym, he always has his hands down. Then someone like Joyce will just patter him with punches because Stiverne has no idea how to keep his hands up. Muscle memory is a *****.
Washington should think about walking away now. He is 37 and has been in some thought fights. Or at least keep to this level. No more prospects or contenders. A fight with Eric Molina would be fun.
He had comfortably beaten a decent heavyweight in Eddie Chambers. So he's not total garbage. He can be a decent test level fighter for up and comers. Bryant Jennings is doing that too. You can make quite a bit of cash doing that, if you can be slightly competitive throughout the fights and avoid early knockouts.
Yeah you see a lot of “undefeated don’t matter”’posts by the same people who also ridicule and write off anyone who loses their zero. And at the same time many of them cream their shorts over Dubois beating a Mike Jameson clone because Triple D has that zero on the right side of his record.
What? I get the feeling you didn't watch the fight Saturday. Washington didn't have a stamina problem. He score a ninth-round KO. And he was RIPPED. It was probably the best shape I've seen him in forever. I would almost describe him as skinny. And you're comparing him freaking Bermane Stiverne? (LOL) Watch the fights before commenting on them, friend. What you said there had absolutely nothing to do with what happened in the ring Saturday. https://ibb.co/TMHPs12
