MCgrain, i know that this is all of your opinion and i respect that, but how do you figure Conn boxing the socks off of Louis and Ali couldn't? Just imagine a bigger stronger version of Conn, better more polished foot work, far better puncher and has a superior arsenal of punches. Louis is simply to flat footed and Ali has proven time and time again that had a cast iron jaw, and has fought champions that punches a lot harder than Louis even when he was past his prime. I personally feel that it would be an absolute clinic by Ali and a display of brilliance, and would stop him late. I take nothing away from Louis because i rate him as the second greatest heavyweight of all time and i am certainly a huge fan, but if you could take anyone that would be the worst style out there for him, then it would be Ali.

Well, my break down of the fight has Ali outboxing Louis for the first 10 or 11 rounds of the fight.

I hear this a lot, and I don't buy it. Firstly, I think that Conn has better footwork in real terms. Certainly he's "More polished" if by that you mean more perfect from a technical standpoint. Ali obviously hits a lot harder but superior arsenal of punches? What punches was Conn missing in his arsenal? Because Ali was short of an uppercut and underused the left hook.

Ali has never been stopped even when he was shot( unless you want to call Holmes stopping a shell Ali), so that's interesting. Louis went the distance with fighters that wouldn't see mid rounds with Ali, so he stops one of the most durable, iron chinned GREATEST heavyweight champion of all time? Can't picture it.
Conn is not on Ali's level in terms of foot work by any means. IMO he was sloppy in his movement and didn't have the polished foot work that Ali had. and by ''polished'' i mean that he didn't move as well, looked off balance most of the time and wasn't as well at fighting going backward. Ali also had a better harder, effective jab which he worked off of. Another thing that Ali had that Conn didn't is natural size and chin, Conn was a light heavyweight where Ali was bigger than Louis, so he was a REAL heavyweight. He also showed the ability to stick to game plan throughout, and not trade giving his opponents their opportunities. Show me one thing that Conn had over Ali that would be effective in this fight, because personally i really don't see anything. I also think that people underestimate the power of Ali has well. He knocked out the majority of champions that he fought and many of the fights didn't have to go late.
My point is that he fought punchers that punched harder so how would Louis just land a couple of shots and stop him? A shot Ali even took bombs from Shavers, who was countering over his jab with COMPACT punches, and even wounded up being stopped himself. Shavers is known by many for being the greatest puncher of all time, and couldn't even floor Ali. That shows you the chin on him.

If anyone would stop a prime Ali it would probably be Louis, in the late rounds.

But I don't agree about Ali's jab. I think it was very effective most of the time, it certainly was in or near his prime and when he meant business. He could be pawing and kind of lazy with most of his punches when he met mediocre opposition, but in the big fight his arsenal always looked very sharp to me.

Congratulations. It's good to see a face with a name -especially a respected name like yours. More should do this. I'd be curious to see some of the mugs that regularly post here.

    Thanks,

I was almost thinking of starting a whole thread devoted to classic regulars posting pics of themselves, but figured that it would get moved to the lounge.

A great idea, i've done this on numerous other types of forums i've been on, and it's most always a resounding success.

My view is that the mods would be silly and out of touch to move it - as a matter of fact i reckon we get such a thread and make it a sticky.

Probably a great idea. I'd like to see what some of our good friends look like. Perhaps we'll get to see how old Old Fogey really is.. Anyway we should give it a shot..
