I'm rewatching my Toney career set. Was Toney not popular in the US early on?

What is the problem with the commentary teams earlier on? Especially against Nunn and against Reggie Johnson, the commentary seems really biased against him.

At the end of the Nunn fight we hear "And Toney is as out as Nunn is!" Cut to a shot of Toney standing hugging handlers, looking ok. Nunn has been stopped!

Anyway, this is one of many examples. Was Toney a particularly unpopular fighter with the establishment in the US at the time? If so, anyone know why?

May I ask where you got your career set at? I've been looking for a good site to try and pick up some reasonably priced sets.

maybe he wasn't as great as you think he was. some on here make out he's a legend of the sport or something. its well known that nunn was kicking his arse before he got stopped.jones jnr battered him too.
don't get me wrong, i rate toney as one of the best of his generation, but he's never been an all time great.

Toney was a massive underdog going into the Nunn fight. He wasn't disliked, he just wasn't really known.

I haven't claimed anywhere that he was particularly great. He missed out on my top 100. I don't just collect fights of the fighters I love.

Hagler just said during the commentary of the McAllum fight, "I PREFER THE 15 ROUND DISTANCE".

Toney was not built up as a star like Nunn

Toney became a star,Nunn resides in the jail house serving years on a set up in 2008
