I look at fighers and learn from them. Most actual professional boxers do that! Floyd Jr would not be doing the shoulder roll without Jr!
But thats just one basic example. I myself would not hold my right hand the way i do had i not studied Bernad Hopkins. I would not twist my straight right like i do without studying the likes of Wladimir Klitchko. I would not bend my knees the way i do without looking at tapes of Pernell Withaker.
I would never have understood the meaning of defence had i not watched Floyd Jr and Willie Pep.
I learned feinting from Hopkins. Double jab from Pavlik and from Chad Dawson i got the "one shot feint jab followed by a second true jab". From Victor Ortiz i got the (in my case) left hook and uppercot combination. Guillermo Rgondeaux reminded me of the importance of proper footwork.
I could go on and on but the point is that i learned mostly from fighters that fight today. They learned from fighters from "ysterday"... Boxing evolves and so do most sports. Just because some guy was great in the past doesn´t mean he would be great today. I believe that Bernard Hopkins could beat Jack Dempsey. Dempsey and Hopkins are the same height but Dempsey would weigh a bit more but not enough to make a difference.

Well tbf, the mexicanos to whom you are referring have the advantages that modern diets (JMM drinking his own **** notwithstanding) and sports science bring, still, all three would be greatly competitive
