Macklin I think was ahead on the cards until 10th-11th rounds, unfortunately he tends to gas out a little in the late rounds due to his high workrate. Don't forget Macklin beat Sturm but was robbed the decision.

Chavez only tagged him because Sergio stumbled while going backwards. That caused Maravilla to drop his guard, give Chavez a wide-open shot. A total gift from the gods.

Watch the fight again if you don't believe me.

    - And then Sergio was fine 20 seconds later and still made it an even round.

Chavez has only a strong left & a thick skull. Absolutely nothing else.

Bull****. Chavez caught him with the same looping right shot earlier in the fight but it had less on it cause Martinez was moving laterally. This time he just happened to move backwards with his usual hands down ****. He got caught, it happens.

    nah.

Martinez is so much smaller then Jr, being 37 years old, with Jr in his prime and Martinez having completely dominated the fight for 30 out of 33 minutes with a style that is going to not only tire you out but drain your legs, especially at 37 years old.... its no wonder he was fatigued in the 12th.

I would have obviously liked to see him not get knocked down but fact is he got up, and fought the last 30 seconds of the fight toe to toe with Jr, giving jr all the chances he could ask for to win it and he couldnt do it.

Victory is fine by me. All of the moral victories in the world of scoring one knockdown on martinez doesnt mean much to me when martinez won 90% of their entire fight.

    just imo

I thought both guys came out looking like studs because of the final round.

Sergio was whooping Jr's ass the whole fight and it looked like a the emperor has lost his clothes moment then he digs deep and put every single bit of heart he had on display. Loved that.

Then Sergio looks like he might be finished if he doesn't act like a coward, clinch and try and survive, so what does he do? He grabs his big balls, grows a beard and with actions, says, "if I'm going down, I'm going down fighting!"

    It was awesome.

Both guys had their status raised in that final round and if you don't agree, then you don't know what makes boxing great.

    Well said.

Though I dont think it would have been cowardly for Martinez to clinch Jr at that point. He had 30 seconds to survive, Im very happy it turned out for him (and honestly, the fact is he really did stand there and trade with jr for those last 30 seconds, if Jr couldnt finish him there, he wasnt going to finish him) but had he gotten stopped because he chose not to clinch a couple times in the last 30 seconds of the fight it would have been a very stupid mistake for a guy as smart as martinez.

anyways, thats just imo, besides that i totally agree. He said if hes going down, hes going down swinging, and was pure warrior against a young fighter in his prime who was much much larger then him. pretty amazing.

The last round added some amazing drama to the fight but Martinez was clearly the better man. If the proposed re-match happens, I'd expect him to be more careful down the stretch and take another comprehensive points win.

How quickly they forget, Macklin dropped Sergio as well, and was actually winning most of that fight, at the time of the stoppage it was neck and neck. The difference here between Macklin and Chavez is Macklin is a good world level fighter who was winning or at least tied up when he gassed out and was stopped. Where as Jr. got schooled, and was never in the fight until the last round when he connected with his last ditch effort, and scored a knockdown, but did **** all else. While proving he never should have had a world title belt, or shared the same ring with Sergio in the first place :hey

Is it that hard to credit both guys?

Martinez put on a clinic. Chavez never gave up and came close to securing a victory which would have been legendary for years to come.

A rematch isn't a bad idea at all. Let Geale and Golovkin fight whilst these two rematch. Then the winners can square off and declare themselves pretty undisputed champion.

I thought he showed alot of heart to fight back and not just hold and run. If anything, it enhanced the win.

You say that, but I bet Chavez Jr. beats him. It's a style thing.

If they fight, and if you remember this, remind me and I will bet you Macklin wins. Deal?
