so i need to know good exercises and sets that will strengthen my thighs and calves, because besides running, at my gym we only do leg exercises maybe once a week
seriously just do squats..dont bother with leg curls extensions raises. squats and deadlifts will make u MUCH stronger and as they are compound exercises your whole body gets worked so u increase functional strength. just lift heavy and 3-5reps and u will notice big differences.
yea, i suck badddddddddddd at weightlifting, but i'm working my way up, i'm gonna try dead lifts, i'll do 5 reps as heavy as i can in 3 sets
bad idea. start light till u are comfortable with the exercise and u have good form. if u try as heavy as possible and dont have good form u will likely hurt yourself
Squats are best for leg strength. As Dan said start with low weights and build yourself up you have to get the technique and form right first or you will injure yourself. I used to do squats with bad form and it gave me constant lower back pain until I corrected it, if I had been doing it with really heavy weights I probably would have messed my back up for good. So start low and work up.
Squats, leg press are good , as they are a compound exercise. However deadlifts, clean and the clean and jerk are far more useful with regards to transference into boxing. Also note the calves play a major role in the punching chain but with a squat or a leg press correct technique means you push from your heel thus your calf is not worked concentrically like it is when you punch. I like to try and hit the calves too so bears are good with lighter weights. Or barbell punchouts.
I do calf raises with my feet pointing at different angles, lots of squats, the static squat, running and cycling.
for boxing i would suggest lots of skipping to build up your calves and for your quads do burpess, or squats ( bodyweigh) or do a few rounds of stair sprints.
