I'm very worred about the future of British Boxing

Television companies do not invest in boxing because it doesn't have a large enough appeal. The general public have an interest in the large fights or people who's names they know but they simply don't have much more than a passing interest in watching prospects.

If it did, the Television companies would jump all over themselves to secure fights. But it's shown to be not worth it. People often cite statistics like "Khan got 6 million viewers for his fight against Kindelin", Yeah thats true but he was already a name and the fact is that Khan would no longer be prepared to fight for the money that would be worth that amount of viewers, when he can go to Sky Box Office and the minority fight fans pay 15 quid each. The problem is mainly with the boxing industry, not the Media. Promotors putting together terrible fights, tomato cans, Fighters having 12 rounders that nobody on the planet would stay tuned in for such as the Williams Skelton borefests

 

I am hoping that possibly this is the moment that the industry sorts itself out. In order to compete more competetive fights needs to be had which is essentially closer to what we are advocating.

If fights become more competetive then maybe television come back and see it as a viable option and offer more dates. One station however is not enough to showcase boxing in thi country. If Warren had a deal with ITV similar to what hennessey had with ITV i think that owuld be ideal for him.

The idea of sending his prospects over to fight in America must also be an appealing one. All the Olympians and a few other top prospects would also benefit from both the exposure and experience. As you said it gives them a profile in the states and would stop the Hattons Calzaghes Khans leaving. I think we are all in agreement something must be done to change the general malaise in british boxing at the moment.

 

all good points, but don't forget the quality of journeymen in this country is way below the quality of some of the opponents fed to prospects in the states.

we could do with promoters investing in getting some bad-ass mexicans over who really come to fight and make our prospects work.

edit: also splashing out a bit of cash to send the cream of the prospects over to the states to get some quality sparring

Some of the journeymen in this country are absolutely terrible - flat out bums.

A proper journeyman is one that comes to win, or at the very least comes to hear the final bell and steal a round or two, as opposed to running away so they can pick up a cheque the week after in another meaningless fight.

I'd look to put the young lads, Gavin etc on big cards abroad, but the problem is that these lads are cash cows and ticket sellers - Groves has been getting the slots because he is essentially a free agent promotionally and can fight for who he wants..... it's certainly a good avenue to pursue because you are able to take the opportunities that are made available rather than doing as you are told.
