Around 1992. Benn blitzed a cold Iran in their 1990 bout. A rematch would n't have been a foregone conclusion though. Barkely came back with some good wins, including a second one over Thomas Hearns.
I agree he caught Iran cold and Iran was more off balance than badly hurt ... however styles make fights and Benn came out fast and Iran usually took a bit to warm up ..
Look at the prefight interviews. Iran is practically emaciated from trying to starve down to make the weight. He kept saying, "I'm hungry, I'm really hungry," and I don't think he was talking about being motivated. He was not only caught cold, he was wasted away. Iran fought at 160, coming off a year of inactivity where he surely blew up well into the cruiser ranks, if not beyond, and never scaled less than 168 the rest of his career.
Barkley was pretty heavily drained for both losses against Benn and Toney.Good paydays though i suspect.
See prefight interview. Iran is actually trying to starve to death, so emaciated body weight. He kept saying, "I'm hungry, I'm really hungry," I do not think he was motivated to talk about.. __________________________________ Tera GoldRS GoldTera Item
Barkley was not a great fighter. His style was either good or bad for fighters. With Benn he matches up well, but he was too slow for Benn's punches. With Hearns, Barkley had to make it an inside fight since Tommy landed his punches from the outside, yet with Benn, since Benn was smaller, he fought Benn on the inside, an Benn being fast on the inside meant he would hit Barkley. That is why Hearns/Benn would have been a classic matchup of Tommy landing from the outside to Benn coming inside. Hearns would have been a much tougher fight for Benn than Barkley was.
They both wanted it. Benn's plan was to fight Andries or Harding then Van Horn or Barkley to become a three-weight champ.
I'd take to Benn to win again. After the first Chris Eubank fight,Nigel became a more well rounded boxer.
Yeah the Lenzie Morgan fight was a classic example of Benn's improved boxing. Morgan had just boxed Tiozzo's ears off in one of the most blatant of robberies, and had the longest jab in the division, and Benn out-jabbed him!
It would be more of the same. Iran Barkley was more or less a flash in the pan who had Hearns' number, IMHO.
He ran Duran and Nunn close, the equivalent of Pacquaio and Mayweather today. And, Olajide was a great prospect. Though he did look three weights bigger than Van Horn.
