As a kid, I watched Hearns starch Duran one Summer Saturday afternoon with my pops just before me and my brother went outside. And all the other kids were talking about it.... You get my point?
cant be any worse with ufc all there good fighters are on ppv cant remember last time i saw rashard evans fight
My point is that boxing in those days was more mainstream because everyone was able to see most of the superfights on network television. Every kid grew up watching these guys on saturday afternoon, and the poplarity of the sport was much greater, for that reason as well as a few others... A few of the modern boxers make much more money now, as well as their promoters, but at what expense to the sport as a whole?
No. I am saying if you grew up in my neighborhood I would knock your ****in ass out like Hearns did Duran. Then I would go home and tell my pops all about it.
----------------------------------------------------------------- Ok I got you now - well for one I think the sport is less main stream. I mean take your average bandwagon fan - think they know the name of any of the champs? Maybe they heard of Mayweather - because alot of the advertising was pumped on to their tv in the US with HBO having huge ratings. But did they pay for it? How many of your friend you mention from that Saturday do you think watched the mayweather fight against marquez! some, maybe - all of them, I very much doubt it. The cost to the sport is that it is not a sport at all. It's all a big industry. If you want to watch boxing as a sport watch the amaterur game.
crappy broadcasting, commercials between rounds, undercard fights being cut cause the time of the broadcast is over.. just a few negatives of boxing on network television
I go to some professional boxing bouts in my home country. When I can afford it, but lately I have had to pass on tickets due to the economic uncertainty of my job in the current Global climate. But I always felt like I get some sort of value for my money when I did attend.Especially due to the undercards. On TV, I am lucky that most of the boxing is broadcast on terrestial tv (RTE, ITV) but some of the boxing I want to watch on Friday is on premium television (Setanta and Sky). I allready pay a tv license and I can't afford to pay the extra €50 Euros per month or whatever to watch these pay channels. It's just laughable that I'm expected to pay even more again as a once of fee for the so called "super fights". That's why I resort to passing the opportunity with exception to the possiblity of a friend staying up until 4 am here and we all chip in but my friends don't watch boxing anymore (Surprise Surprise).
If you can't afford PPV then why are you alive? Complain all you want, these guys deserve to get paid for putting their lives on the line. Can't afford it?, go to UFC where the PPV is $19.99 and you get over 15 matches per PPV NOT counting dark matches, that would be about 25.
------------------------------- I don't think you understand my point. There is no problem with the boxers getting paid all the money they deserve - but why should Bob Arum be making millions as well! The $19.99 is not going to the boxers themselves only a tiny portion. I am not interested in UFC by the way.
