Imagine if Roberto Duran at 140 lbs takes on WBA Champion Aaron Pryor of 1982. After abdicating his undisputed World Lightweight Title in 1979 after 12 successful title defenses from 1972 until 1979, Duran has a knockout recorded over contender Monroe Brooks. He is offered a title bout against Pryor who just stopped challenger Alexis Arguello in round 14. How do you think this hypothetical fantasy match would turn out, it is a 15 round bout at 140 lbs.

What a fight this would be!!!!

Both men could punch and brawl. Both had good whiskers. Both had a warrior mentality. The tiebreak in this one would be boxing skill. Pryor was skilled but not nearly as much as Duran.

Hands of Stone outboxes The Hawk enroute to a late rounds tko over him in an action packed bout.

Stevie G, You brought up some good points, both could bang, Pryor does have faster hands, but he too could be floored, remember the July 4th 1982 title defense against challenger Akio Kameda, Pryor was firing away, got decked, did a somersault as the referee was giving him the mandatory eight count. Duran could be flustered by boxers, Esteban De Jesus, Ray Lampkin, Lou Bizzarro and later on Sugar Ray Leonard. It would be a great fight indeed.

he should have fought him... It was meant to be and I think he could have won a fight like that, since Pryor liked to engage and Roberto drowned out guys who tried to fight him. The way to beat Duran is to make him move and follow and not fight on the inside and use his great skills.

For about 8rds possibly the most brutal fight in history. Duran would be forced to fight at a pace he normally doesn't get drawn into. Against a man hell bent on imposing his will on him, with the skills, speed, and power to do so.
But after 8rds Duran's better physical strength would began to take it's toll.
One thing most don't take into account is Duran's legs strength. He was able to push strong welterweights like Leonard and Palomino around the ring, maneuver them and keep the in the corners and on the ropes.
Duran would be able to keep the naturally smaller Pryor on the ropes and corners and maul him .
He'd take some steam off of Pryors shots by repeatedly staying in his chest.
By the 9-10th rds Duran would be in control , and that Charles Manson look would be on his face.
By the 11 th or 12th rd , Duran stops Pryor brutally by devastating ko.
The Hawk has been shot down and counted out on his back.

I think it would be about like that, ending maybe a couple of rounds earlier. Pryor was a great fighter, too...but prime Duran...

I like the Hawk and think he'd whip Mayweathers azz at 140, but Duran is all wrong for Aaron. I actually think Pryor's style gets him ko'ed inside 5 ,the way he lunges in at times and squared up to attack. Plus Pryor was shorter than Duran and had no physical advantages.

Great fight while it lasts. Duran's brilliant instincts and technical advantages take the chocolates. He's got everything else at 140 too - plenty of speed, great durability and loads of power. His brutal body attack and infighting skills will necessitate that Pryor goes into boxing mode after testing Duran early via an aggressive start. Duran scores an early flash knockdown and when Pryor customarily goes right back at him harder Duran welcomes the frenzied aggression and makes him pay landing raking shots to both body and head while taking noticeably little in return. Duran forces him to the ropes and puts some serious heat on him forcing Pryor to change it up to a more cautious approach.

The rounds fall into a predictable pattern with Duran pressuring and Pryor utilizing his underrated skills. Duran traps Pryor on the ropes at various times and goes to work while Pryor has some fleeting success with out of the blue attacks of his own, throwing punches in bunches and trying to get out of there before Duran finds his range. Duran slowly wears Pryor down and at some point late in the fight times one of Pryor's ebbing attacks and drops him hard. Pryor rises but Duran is all over him like white on rice and the ref chooses to end proceedings with Pryor still on his feet.
