It would be a good win, but in reality the Kovalev who fought Ward the first time would be a totally different fight probably. Canelo now sees the body aspect and that will be his plan.
This must be eating Ward up, he smugly smirked how he beat Kova & how Kova had never had a proper payday & was robbed etc ...who's laughing now ....
acie2g, I like that you're a passionate fan, and I'm really enjoying the debate. Most of the above has been covered in my previous post. Why should GG have dropped to 154 when he was hoping to unify at MW? He'd have been criticised for it, and I don't think Lara would have fought him anyway. Again, I don't know why you believe that Cotto would have fought him at a C-W. It's nonsense. And if MW was too big for Cotto, he should have stayed away from the division. If you're willing to fight for a belt and then celebrate winning it, you should be obligated to defend it. What Cotto saw was a winnable fight against an injured Martinez, and then a fight against a JMW in Canelo. What on earth makes you think that GG could have taken Khan's slot to get the Canelo fight 18 months earlier? It's silly to think that. Again, directly after the Khan fight, Oscar told the media that they'd try and make the GG fight. Yet the next thing we knew, he'd signed to fight Liam Smith. So you're kidding yourself. Oscar delayed that fight as long as he possibly could in order to give Canelo the best chance of beating him. Regarding Ward, again, GG thought that he was lined up to unify against the winner of Canelo-Cotto, early in 2016. So why would he have moved up at that point? It made no sense at the time. And Ward had only fought twice in 2 years and doubted whether or not he could comfortably make SMW again. GG has already beaten Jacobs, Fielding was an easy title grab, and lots of people have wanted GG to fight Sergy for a while. It's okay saying if GG fought Andrade etc, but is that fight even available? Canelo has said he doesn't want to fight GG again. And he doesn't have to does he? Because Oscar has other options for him.
I've covered the above points in 2 posts now. No, I don't think that GG is a fearsome monster. I actually think that's he's overrated by many. But it's as clear as day that the fighters you have mentioned wouldn't fight him.
Armstrong never defended his Featherweight title. he went from Featherweight to Welterweight then back down to lightweight in about 4 months. He made 19 defences in 24 months of his Welterweight belt tho. But no, it wouldn't be more impressive as the distance between Featherweight and Welterweight is further than the distance between Middleweight and Light heavyweight. Also Armstrong was the undisputed champion, Canelo and Kovalev aren't and the belt he won at super middleweight really isn't even a world title anymore
Considering the weight jump it will be a very good win but the facts are Kovalev is 37 next time & was recently on the verge of his THIRD KO loss (but hung tough to his credit..) against a greenhorn.. He himself said he would have retired had he lost to Yarde.. that's not a mindset of a fighter who's got the 'eye of the tiger' is it.. he's cashing out here.. plain as day.. is he shot? No. Faded? Clearly.. in terms of athleticism & punch resistance.. spin it anyway u want folks but this is not the Kovalev of the Pascal, Cleverly & Bhop fights.. that guy would have took Canelo apart.. There's a reason he chose Kovalev rather than a Bivol, Andrade, Smith or Beterbiev.. Ageing, war torn lion name recognition! Looks good on paper but look a little deeper.. I suspect Kovalev is about to become ripe for the picking .. Sort of like Sergio Martinez was in his mid 30s.. the slip is evident if you're honest with yourself.. heavier on his feet & the snap has gone from his punches..
Agree to disagree I guess, just from my perspective I've seen guys like Ward or Cotto make concessions to get a fight, o haven't seen GGG do that once so I'm more inclined to believe the former and not the latter. Maybe these guys were ducking like people say but we will never know because at the end of the day when an offer was made GGG was the one who said no not the other way around.
Already covered, but it’s a decent scalp if Canelo legitimately beats Kov. Serge has looked very bad at times in recent fights including his last one against an unskilled opponent. He’s not the same guy who beat Ward in that first fight (technically beat him to any unbiased viewer who knows anything about boxing). If Kov comes into the fight in great shape and looks sharp, and gets legitimately beat by Cinnamom, you have to give the smaller man props. If it’s another “controversial” win on the scorecards, I have to rate it for what it is, another black eye for the sport. Won’t me the first or the last. Similar to the first GGG fight. Canelo lost that fight handily and it ended in a tie. Lastly, if Canelo finishes the fight in his feet, I suspect he gets his hand raised weather he deserves it or not.
I’ve just seen the clip of canelo stood next to Kovalev and Kovalev looks massive!!! I’m putting my money on krusher even if he doesn’t like body shots and is getting on
@Loudon all good bro that's what sports are about competition and fans on both sides, telling there team so to speak it's one thing that unifies all people so sports in general is something I'm passionate about. As far as our debate I think with this is comes down on what you choose to believe. You say why fight Lara at 154, at ths time technically Lara was WBA Champ as Canelo didnt want his belt, was looked at as a boogie man that none wanted to fight and had people thinking he beat Canelo if you can't get good fights and you claim you can make weight WHY NOT take on a fighter no one else will a 1 oft fight at 154 what would be the downside, as much as Lara is hated people would have LOVED to see GGG smash him I would. With Cotto i believe him based off his history, he moved thru 3 1/2 divisions fought the best of the best at 140-54, he even beatdown GGGs best win at the time in Geale at a 157 cw after that fight he stated out his own mouth that he wanted to make history and that while he isn't a MW if GGG wanted to fight at 57 or around there he would take the fight GGG said no. Again while I'd rather not have catchweights for titles B.Hopkins that last Undisputed MW Champ unified belts at a cw vs Hoya in route to that. Again if you can make weight why not call his bluff you could be right and Cotto might have came up with another excuse but GGG refused out right and missed out. Cotto took 3 fights above 154 Martinez, Geale, Canelo Again Canelo out his own mouth said if GGG would fight at a cw he would have taken that fight earlier, Canelo and GGG negotiationed before the Khan fight Canelo wanted a cw GGG said no so Canelo fought Khan, at that point even tho he was technically a MW Champ he had never fought over JMW before, if GGG would have agreed to 56-58 based of history he likely would have gotten the fight, Canelo has fought Trout and Lara when they said he wouldn't, fought GGG b2b his first 2 fights at 160 and is fighting Kivalev 2 divisions up... name the 160 or 68 Chamo that would beat Current Kovalev...None so why would Canelo not fight GGG at a cw if he agreed his next fight was Smith for the IBF title at 154 to enforce the point of not yet being a MW. GGG had no guarantee of fighting either fighter, he did have a guarantee to fight one of the best p4p fighters at the time even in a loss he would get major respect for even challenging and a loss might have actually helped him accomplish his goal of uniting 160 earlier not looking unbeatablea and a win would have solidified him as P4P best in the sport and would have made him a real too dog. Ward was the one who asked for the fight he said the only fight he would take at 169 was GGG he wanted to fight him before Kovalev GGG refused.. Again you are arguing you point and maybe you believe its true and that none of them would have fought him but he never called any fighters bluff, now you are asking why should he do this or why that Lara at 54 (2015) Cotto/Canelo at 57(2015/16), Ward at 68 (2016) Would still be better than anything he's done eventually he fought Canelo and ended up with a loss and a draw might have had a better chance vs a less experienced fighter.
Been saying the same thing. Kovalev Is finished and has been since Ward beat him in the second fight. Canelo is going to the body and getting the TKO stoppage somewhere between 8-10 rounds.
