...which of these do you think is the most noteworthy "impressive in a loss" fights? Choose from my list, feel free to add your own... ...sorry about the short list. It's all I could think of at the top of my head. I also wanted to include only fights in which the winner won decisively, but the loser performed much better than expected, but decided to include fights like FMJ-Castillo I and Pac-JMM I, fights that in many people's eyes, could have went either way...have at it. *I realize Pac-JMM was a draw, but it should have been a Pac win, but wasn't due to a judge's error. Sort of cheating having that one up there, but I had a hard time coming up with anything.
From the list...........Vitali against Lewis. Azumah Nelson vs Salvador Sanchez is the best example I can come up with.
From that list, Castillo against Floyd as I felt he deserved the decision. Morales putting up such an effort as he did against Maidana at this stage of his career is probably the most admirable though. All time, Billy Conn vs Joe Louis is the obvious answer.
The first thing that comes to mind is Jorge Linares against Antonio DeMarco. Linares looked great in there but got stopped in the 11th. You got some good choices there Tony, hard to pick one. But I'll go with Castillo against Floyd. The JMM vs Pac was a draw not a loss, or are you considering it a loss?
Yes. Good one. I wouldn't say "all time", but I agree that was a good night for Conn. I don't know what the hell he was thinking trying to go for the ko with only 2 rounds remaining.
Linares-DeMarco is way too recent, but I respect your opinion. And yes, I am considering the fight a loss for JMM, considering if it wasn't for the judege's error, it would have been a loss on paper. But how Juan came back after that 1st round blitz is a thing to behold.
Its close between Marquez coming back after the devastating first round or Morales against Maidana, I fully expected him to get KO'd within 6. Although Castillo fought a great fight and I scored it a draw Floyd did have a shoulder injury.
I'm not sure if Malignaggi belongs on there. The only impressive thing was that he survived that brutal assault from Cotto, not much of what he did in the way of offense. He did show some grit that night though.
I thought Morales would get pole axed within 3 rounds. I was speaking with Addie while playing FNC, and we both were wondering why the hell that fight was signed. Still, you have to wonder if Morales' success was due to him being Morales, or due to Maidana being exposed for what he is... overrated. :think
