I remember when I joined this site, I made a thread about how Amir Khan's chin should improve as he moves up in weight. I pretty much got shitted on with comments like:

"you either have a chin or you don't"
"the chin is the one thing that can't be improved"
    etc

I think that slowly the consesus is changing on this. A chin can vary between fights for other reasons. Eg:

Kirkland - normally solid chinned. Did inactivity or rapid weight loss have an impact?
Roy Jones Jr - rapid weight loss left him glass jawed
Khan - Move up in weight, along with leg strengthening have improved his chin
Morales - looked finished against Pac III but took Maidana's shots easily
Haye - drained at cruiser and it showed. Took Wlad's shots easily enough

What do you guys think? Can a chin actually be improved are you stuck with a good/bad one?

Conditioning affects punch resistance, anyone who says otherwise is a babboon.

Build can also have an effect, strong legs / traps seem to help, in theory building these up would improve your chin.

However some people just seem to have poor punch resistance regardless. See fighters who are at their optimum weight/conditioning and still have pretty poor chins.

it helps to have a wide jaw, thick neck, strong legs, good conditioning and pain resistence

You can work on yorn neck, legs and conditioning, so yes. "chins" can get better, no by to much though

Cotto, Khan and Haye appear to be examples of chins that improved as they moved up in weight. However, people don't take into account improved defence, counterpunching and style changes among other things. The better fighter you become defensively the less you get hit. The better you become offensively the easier you deal with and control your opponent. Protecting your chin can often be confused with a 'better' chin imo.

Cotto is probably the clearest example of a fighter who's chin has improved. It isn't granite now but it's pretty difficult to get him wobbly legged.

Im not an expert by any means but ive heard from other poster that draining weight fast reduces some kind of liquid protection around the brain and effectively rattling the brain more for a concussive effect

No kidding. Goddamn, these glass jaw deniers and fanboys are always grasping at straws. The best a fighter with poor punch resistance can do is to protect those shaky whiskers so his china chin doesn't get shattered again.

Drinking Ginger and doing Ocular exercises can improve your chin. Not medically proven but I can say it works nicely.

Yes, chins can improve. When you start to struggle to make a certain weight and you move up, usually your punch resistance gets better.

    Pacquiao is a perfect example.

Very true...you become more savvy as you get more experienced.

There is really not one answer here as every fighter is different... Definitely conditioning plays a big role in almost every fighters durability.
But some fighters do get more durable when they move up because they arent drying themselves out as much...some fighters learn from their ko losses and become smarter..Some fighters just have more of a dig sometimes, and it can be a bit of mental thing.

Some fighters just get caught cold sometimes and it doesn't get repeated because it was one of those freaky things that happens in this sport.

Amir Khan does not have a good chin and thats always going to be the case...but no one will beat him like Prescott again..that loss had a little bit to do with everything I just mentioned, plus Khan's whiskers just not being on the same level as the rest of his game...He will get dropped again soon, and before he retires he will get stopped again.
