In 1989, did fans say that Mike Tyson could reach Joe Louis' 25 title defenses?

    Probably... It seemed that way.
(Robin Givens then sucked all the "Iron" out of Mike)

I can't remember for sure, but I'm pretty sure people thought he was going to blow out all records at the time.

Hopefully someday, we will see another Mike Tyson type, great for boxing. The story really has it all.

Some bookmakers were offering odds on it.

I would have thought the same. He went pro in 1985 and won the title in 1986 while fighting 15 fights his first year and 13 the second. Even when he was champ, he stayed very active

Almost certain that some did. Still wasn't necessarily a bad call for them to make given what they had available to go by at the time.

I remember a lot of people predicting that he'd break Marcianos 49-0 mark. I heard more about that than the 25 defenses

Didn't encroach on Joe or Rocky, but did quite well in his own right I'd say.

Yeah he did. He never really came close to either record... but was THE guy in the late 80's. THAT Mike was a fantastic all around boxer

Tyson used to say he wanted to the youngest and oldest champion.

As Jersey Joe Walcott (37yrs) had the record at the time that would have been 17yrs as champ.

He lost on his 10th defense if I recall. I mean, he could have easily gotten in the teens if he didn't ****ing stop taking the game seriously.
