Lil Arthur would have been 120 in 8 days time,

The more i see and read about the great Jack Johnson , the more i like what he stood for..

Not the finest fighter to watch , but a demon of a defensive fighter.. You couldn't hit him flush with a bag of rice if he was at his best..

Jack was the kind of man who would have fitted right in at most eras because he was quite a large black heavy for the time...

Arrogant as hell.. He makes Floyd jr and Mike Tyson pale into sygnificance.. I would love to have met that man, like Liston, an absolute legend..

    any thoughts..

He would have been 130 years old.

On the serious point, I think he would do quite well in modern boxing if he grew up in it. He might be the cruiserweight champion rather than the heavyweight champion, though. He seems on film to be very strong and to have quick reflexes for a big man.

I'm sure you wouldn't be as the most hated/despised man on the planet.

Yes you are correct, Jack was born in 78 ..

Jack was amazing to watch , he would slip punches like they were nothing.. like he was catching them out of the air..

    fascinating.....

..........If you haven't seen it, you must watch Ken Burns' documentary film on him. Good stuff, full of rare footage, even if it doesn't touch on any real new ground for students of the man.

One of my prized possessions is a copy of a poster of Johnson in fighting pose used as an advertisement for the film, signed by Burns. A friend of my sister's met him, as she works at the local PBS station here and he visited. I got it as a birthday gift. I got it framed.

I think he would be verry popular today.

He was charming, inteligent, articulate and fan friendly. A verry much larger than life personality who knew how to promote himself. He would be on all the talk shows and in the fashion magazines. Probably marry Jenifer Lopez.

Definitely a man who would have thrived in a more tolerant era.

Toast a glass of bubbly to the man. He would appreciate that. Despite character flaws (of which we are all guilty) he was a great fighter and helluva brave man.

I didn't realize he was almost as old as Sonny Liston.

Johnson broke the law, was a pimp, and beat up women within inches of their lives. As the champion, he gave the public BS performances and skirted the top 5 contenders. Is that the type of guy you like to root for, McVey?

A better question is who could you send the birthday card to? Johnson was married a few times, yet he never fathered a child of his own. There is a chance that Johnson caught some sexually transmitted disease ( Johnson mixed with numerous prostitutes ) , and became sterile.
