In '91 why did Toney get to keep his IBF MW title after being .25 lbs overweight?

Toney had a fight w/ Dell'Aquilla in Monte Carlo, he was .25 lbs overweight and yet the IBF let him keep the belt anyway when it was for the title. Why did this happen?

According to boxrec he was 1/4lb, maybe that was the first weigh in and he was allowed to sweat it off? I cant see them wanting to strip him anyway tbh

Well this issue was raised when I was watching the British version of Toney-McCallum I. The commentary team said he was indeed .25 lb overweight but they still sanctioned the bout as a title fight anyway so apparently he didn't sweat the weight off

I believe the IBF gave him a fine but didn't strip his title. No real explanation was given from what I know, they basically overlooked it.

    Corruption, plain and simple.

The sanctioning body just did whatever the hell it felt like, and didn't care whether it was right or wrong or what anyone else thought about it; just like when Zab Judah was allowed to keep his title after Baldomir beat him.

Toney should've been stripped, but was given a flagrant gift in being allowed to continue on and defend his title as though nothing happened.

Just a fine? That's BS. He should've been stripped. Hell, if they still wanted him to be IBF champion, in a correct and fair manner they could've just stripped him anyway and put him in a fight for the vacant title after this fight.

Sadly I think the Toney scenario was worse because at least the IBF didn't recognize the Baldo fight as a title fight. Still a bad choice to not strip Zab though. The IBF is one corrupt organization.

Not really because Toney won, Judah lost inside the WW limit, Judah should have at least been stripped if they didnt give it to Baldomir. Toney's opponent also probably wasnt a mandatory but a voluntary opponent meaning it didnt affect his title status unless he lost to him. Both times it was probably about money but the Toney case is semi-understandable

Lots of champions of the past have fought over the weight limit, Robinson would have been a Lightweight world champion making him a 3weight champion if Angott didnt come in 1lb over the weight limit
