Definitiley, you cannot rely on stamina alone to pull you through the bout, you need to study the boxer. Every boxer is different, whether said boxer is of offensive style, pushing you 12 rounds, or they are a defensive artist making you miss shots.

Some people are natural, other others have to work harder - and that applies in any sport.

Can never rely on an early KO really, in a championship fight he would expect his opponent to also come in 100% shape ready to go the full 12. The best bet is to use skill and try to guarantee as much rounds as possible using defense and skill without throwing more punches than needed per round. Saving energy that way then taking it out late to try and score a KO is a better bet than trying to score one early then running out of gas and getting knocked out as a result. Haye fought smart against Valuev, used his ability, landed as much as he needed to score a round and tried to finish late. A fighter is smart when he knows when to save energy and knows what he's supposed to do to save energy and win rounds at the same time.

I'm sure Jermain and his team know well that he has stamina issues, Jermain just used that fighting the best opponents available. He could have fought a long list of bums to be on the safe side the way Pavlik has been doing.

pace yourself. jump the gun only if you're confident you would get the job done, otherwise, save it and wait for opportunity
