I don't see why not. Either way, it would've been a fencing match par excellence if something of a bloody nightmare from a judge's perspective, Driscoll as he was being nigh on impossible to outslick or outbox within his own time and Pep being Pep. I have a hard time envisioning that many punches being landed one way or the other though I might imagine Driscoll opting to take the front foot on a more frequent basis than Pep in order to make better use of his superior punching power. Still, I'd expect both of them to sort of cancel each other out in the long run. But to stop prattling and answer the actual question, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Driscoll nick a decision at least once in a series. The man was a marvel.
Dont think Driscoll can win this, I think Pep is quicker and has a brilliant jab, two ingrediants in which Welsh caused hell for Driscoll with. I although think Pep is better in close.
Bear in mind that Welsh was an atg lightweight though whereas Driscoll was a natural featherweight. From the stuff I've read it seems that Welsh (who had an excellent jab himself) did give Driscoll some trouble with his jab although not enough to win that particular duel. It seems to have been his superior natural strength and dirty tactics that pissed Driscoll off to the point where his temper boiled over.
Nice wombles avater. I think Pep is better than Welsh though. From my readings on the fight Welsh actually surprised everyone by being the quicker man and out-jabbing Driscoll to take an early lead, although Driscoll then inched ahead by (curiously fighting to Welsh's strength and winning) fighting inside. All in all, it was a very weird fight. I dont think his strength had much to do with it although Driscoll was tiring badly (perhaps due to being smaller man), and the fouling really annoyed Driscoll.
Aye, it seems to have been a tad strange. I suppose that my overriding point was that Welsh was naturally bigger and stronger than Pep (if not quite as good) and an all-time great in his respective weight class. Very clever, crafty, defensively skilled and quick. It's true that he took Driscoll aback with his speed and the proficiency of his own jab, yet Driscoll was able to adapt accordingly to the surprise before the size disparity and dirty tricks became a bit too much as a combination. I think he'd have anticipated Pep's speed more than Welsh's with the former being known for his quickness moreso than the latter. No surprises if you like. A crude comparison might be Pep's loss to Angott - a bigger man who was clever, awkward and willing to do the down and dirty in order to get a result. It's more than ok to suggest that Pep wins, but I'm not sure that the Welsh fight is particularly indicative. I'm going to stop being a pedant and reassess my life now thank you.
Btw, I'm going through a slightly disturbing Wombles phase. Tried to switch the avatar to one of Lolo Jones in the niff but the bloody thing wouldn't work. So I've had to clean up Wimbledon Common instead.
