    Toney sparred a ton and had over 90 pro fights and 600 pro rounds, so he took a lot of punishment.

    Boxers who are excellent defensively, I always keep in mind that they had to work a lot in the gym to get to that level. And in doing so, they surely took a lot of hits in the gym. Some of them start taking them as young kids

    There is a good boxing documentary called After The Last Round, talking about boxers and brain damage. They discuss how it’s difficult to predict how fighters will fare in the long run from the hits to the head as everyone is different.

    Jake LaMotta was sharp mentally into his 90s despite having over 100 pro fights. I hear Donald Curry isn’t doing too good nowadays, and I think that’s from his long amateur career.
