    Outstanding technically?

    Please!

He was always easy to hit, especially with a right hand, and he used 'cuffing punches' where he used to concentrate more on volume rather than accuracy.

If you think he had the technical ability of Floyd, then you're either trolling or you're clueless.

As great and as awkward as he was, a lot of his fights were very scrappy. I know, I watched all of them.

Floyd was on other level, and I can't stand the guy as a person.

The Reid fight was very close, and he was a B-C class fighter, just like Bika was.

    Scratchlin,

    Joe out worked him.

At 43, Bernard couldn't take the pace that Joe set.

It was a case of 'quality vs quantity'

Joe threw huge amounts of shots, most of which were ineffectual, but caught the judges eyes.

Bernard threw very little, but they were of much higher quality.

It was one of Joe's best wins, although I personally scored it as a draw at the time.

Bernard beat Pavlik afterwards and looked great. But I thought that Pavlik was made for him and it was at a 170 C-W.

Bernard always had issues with 'movers'

His wins over Cloud etc were only great due to his age. Those types of guys were nothing special. He couldn't beat Dawson, and I honestly believe that Tarver could have been drained in their fight.

Although he was still a world class fighter when Joe beat him, I don't think he was a great LHW, and he was obviously well past his physical prime.

@Loudon I didn't ask for an essay. You and Herol must be friends you are both bat**** crazy, and pathogically obsessed with the great Joe C.

If Calzaghe wasn't A Level technically, then who the **** is! His speed, skills, volume and overall ability were something special. He literally had everything. He was a true winner.

    Push your biased hate aside.

Technique isnt everything. Aaron Pryor is far less technically proficient than Mayweather. Yet in an actual boxing fight he would decapitate Mayweather.

    Crazy?

For pointing out that Joe was easy to hit, that he cuffed his punches, and that he wasn't as technically proficient as Floyd?

    Yeah.

    It's me who's crazy.

This topic is obviously way above your level of knowledge.

Only an absolute clown would rate Joe's skills as being better than Floyd's.

    Run along.

    Styles make fights.

We all know that. But on this thread, we are doing direct comparisons.

In terms of ability, Floyd was simply on another level.

Anyone who disputes that is either a troll or has no knowledge of both fighters.

Joe will never rank higher on any knowledgeable persons ATG list.

It would be laughable to place him that high, either on ability or resume.

I guess I just dont agree with more technically proficient means they're automatically a better fighter. Toney and Hopkins are more proficient pugilists than Roy Jones. But having watched all 3 I think Jones is better than them. Cotto, Marquez, Morales and Barrera are more proficient boxers than Pacquiao. But Pacquiao is better than they are.

Mayweather is vulnerable to pressure and being outworked. For example if he fights Pernell hes just going to get outworked, flat out. If he fights Duran or Pryor he gets steamrolled.

Calzaghe has his weaknesses like all fighters do. But nobody is out working him. And that's not something that should just be cast aside like it doesnt matter.

    @Loudon

You probably already know this, but the most effective way to beat a more skilled fighter is to use volume. That's what Joe does. Sometimes just simply throwing and throwing works.

    Again, styles make fights.

But if you do a comprehensive breakdown on Floyd and Joe's abilities, both offensively and defensively, Floyd would come out on top by a significant margin.

I don't think any fighters could outwork Joe. But you wouldn't have needed to have outworked him to have beaten him. Reid and Hopkins came close.

A guy like Andre Ward would have used a style similar to Bernard's.

You can't just out volume everyone at the highest level, not when you're technically and defensively flawed.

It's only going to get you so far at the highest level.

Again, a 43 year old Hopkins nearly beat him on quality over quantity.

Also, would Joe have had the confidence to have tried to have outworked great fighters of the past?

If he'd have gone in the ring and tried to have out volumed a guy like Roy Jones whilst he was at his peak, he'd have found himself in the middle of a shootout. A shootout where he'd have come off second in regards to speed, power, timing, accuracy and defense.

He was a very awkward fighter who had great attributes. But he won't ever be classed as a true ATG.

He had neither the ability or the resume to be placed that high.

Harsh man, at least we know Joe never messed with IV's. I prefer to back a clean fighter than a cheat, but each to their own !

He had more than just work rate obviously, and he remained undefeated at the very top of his profession
Hopkins was very cagey at that point in his career, stood off way more looking for openings, negative..If Joe had of fought him earlier, he would've fought a different style, Hopkins changed, become more conservative, less openings and imo he extended his career with the help of peds. The reason I think he was on peds is because he looked for every advantage he could in the ring if things weren't going his way, why not peds, it suits him badly
He cherry picked cab drivers at his peak
Speed ?? Joes fast enough to catch Jones and the BIG difference is, there's only one man with a chin..Jnr anyway was another Ped cheat..Joe just slapped up all time great American ped users imo the more I think about it...He got his best and clean challenges from Euro fighters !

You're right sir that was harsh and I cringed right after typing it. FTR, Joe and Kessler were two of my favorite fighters in their day. That was a huge oversell by me, I retract it, and apologize to anyone that took offense to it. You're an honest and great poster, I hope that didnt upset you too much.

i am not sure why this turned in jones calzaghe i thought it was about money. But Joe managed to beat one top dog of SMW in 10 years, jones beat most of the top dogs of three divisions in that time. Its not even close.

calzaghe is more like lebedev, a guy who was at pains to be classed elite, nevermind ATG. Joe was solid world class though, no question.
