In an earlier era, could J. Calzaghe have fought at 160, with a same day weigh in?

  4. Did you know a year or two before he turned pro he beat Chris Byrd at middleweight in the amo's.

Won welterweight, light middleweight, and middleweight ABA titles 3 years on the bounce.

So early on his career he could of made 160 without a doubt.

    I agree.

Do you think Joe could have made 160, with a same day weigh in?

Do you think Enzo would have boiled him down, or do you think he'd have turned pro at 175?

I actually think that Joe could have been stronger at 175.

Foxy 01, thinks that the LHW's would have been too big, and it wouldn't have been fair.

But I don't agree at all.

I think Joe was naturally quite a big guy, at 6ft, walking around at 200 pounds.

in the later part of his career, no chance, unless he didn't mind getting into the ring looking like a shriveled vegetable

he would of done fine at 175 in the old days

I agree that early on, it could have been possible.

But I'm hypothetically, looking at what would have happened if he'd have turned pro in the 70's and 80's with a same day weigh in?

The same day weigh in would have made a huge difference.

Could he have made it and fought there safely and effectively, or do you think he'd have turned pro and fought at LHW?

Loudon - i was reading some Calzaghe thread a few days ago and you had gotten into a drawn out debate with Foxy01. Is this what this threads about?

    Yes.

He was hurling obscenities around, and everytime I asked him to start a thread he wouldn't. So here it is.

He didn't even take the same day weigh in into consideration at all.

Joe would probably have had to have starved himself to hit 160. So what sort of condition would he have been in to fight that same day?

He thinks Enzo would have boiled him down to 160 in the 70's.

I don't think Joe could have made it, but even if he could have pulled it off, it wouldn't have been safe with the same day weigh in.

I'm certain that given the choice of fighting at 160 or 175, he'd have gone for 175.
